Job summary

Royal Mail in Whitechapel is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) for a 9-month fixed-term role. You will sort letters and parcels, deliver by van and on foot, and build relationships with customers in your local area. The role is active, outdoors, and involves shifts across 7 days.

You must hold a full manual UK driving licence and be physically fit to walk long distances, lift mailbags, and work in all weather. Training is provided, and a uniform and a Royal Mail van are supplied.

Qualifications

• A full UK manual driving licence with up to 6 penalty points.
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and pass a driving assessment.
• Physically fit to walk long distances, climb stairs/hills and lift 10kg+ mailbags.
• Reliable, self-motivated and organised.
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently.

Location: Whitechapel Delivery Office, E1 1AA

Job type: Fixed Term

Contract: 9 months

Salary: £16.24 per hour* (paid monthly) + paid overtime available.

Working hours: 37 hours per week - working 5 days in 7 across Monday - Sunday - between 07.19 - 15:07 or 12:00 - 20:00. Please note that you must be flexible to work either shifts. More information will be given in the interview.

You'll work on a rotating shift schedule, including some weekends. Your rota will confirm your hours and delivery routes, which may vary based on demand.

What To Expect

This role is physically demanding and fast-paced:

• Walking long distances (up to 12 miles / 20,000+ steps)
• Driving a Royal Mail van daily

• Busy, time-pressured days, especially during peak periods

About You

We'll provide full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van. You'll need:

• A full manual UK driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points, registered to your current name and address)
• Willingness to drive a Royal Mail van daily and able to pass a driving assessment
• Physically fit and comfortable walking long distances, climbing stairs / hills, and lifting / carrying 10kg+ mailbags
• Reliable and self-motivated
• Strong organisation and resilience in a busy environment
• Customer-focused, with pride in delivering great service
• Comfortable working outdoors and independently
