Job summary

Maven Capital Partners in Edinburgh/Glasgow is seeking a Portfolio Executive to join our Scottish team. Based in Edinburgh or Glasgow, you will manage a diverse portfolio of investee companies, provide strategic guidance to management teams, and help deliver value creation across sectors.

You will report to the Partner for the region, attend board meetings, and collaborate with a broad network of investors to maximise shareholder value while ensuring compliance with policies.

Qualifications

5+ years of relevant work experience in financial or commercial management.
Experience partnering with investee management teams to drive growth and profitability.
Knowledge of corporate finance transactions and value creation strategies.
Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and influence stakeholders.
Proven track record in SME environments and working with institutional investors.

Responsibilities

Proactively manage a portfolio of investee companies at various growth stages.
Provide input on strategy, growth plans and cash-flow management.
Attend investee board meetings and engage with senior management for strategic guidance.
Deliver regular updates and performance reviews for the portfolio.
Prepare papers for the Maven investment committee for follow-on funding or changes to terms.
Build relationships with local business networks to raise Maven’s profile.

We are currently recruiting for a Portfolio Executive to join our Scottishteam. This role will report directly to the Partner responsible for the region.

Deployment of capital from a range of client funds including Maven’s Venture Capital Trusts and the Investment Fund for Scotland (IFS) has resulted in a significant and growing portfolio of Scottish investments. The successful candidate will have a rare opportunity to join an experienced investment house, gaining valuable exposure to SMEs at different stages and operating across a wide variety of sectors.

You will provide assistance and guidance to investee company management teams, challenge strategy, monitor growth and cash requirements against plan, support the delivery of value creation plans, and leverage professional network contacts where appropriate, with the overall aim of increasing shareholder value.

The role & responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Proactive management of an investee company portfolio ranging from high potential growth businesses in the scaleup phase, through to established SMEs requiring a more strategic approach.
Hands-on support to portfolio companies requiring direct input and guidance to address specific business opportunities and challenges, including new products and new markets, cost base optimisation, M&A support for bolt-on acquisitions, new business initiatives and implementation of successful exit strategies.
Attendance at investee company board meetings and meetings with senior management teams to provide strategic support and constructive challenge.
Provide robust and insightful monthly/quarterly updates and reviews of individual and consolidated investee company performance within the portfolio.
Prepare papers for the Maven investment committee for follow-on funding or amendments to the investment terms.
Attendance at local business networking events to raise Maven’s profile with potential investees and investment intermediaries.
Work collaboratively and support other members of the portfolio management team in monitoring the portfolio and helping with the value creation agenda.
The successful candidate will carry out any other duties that are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or member of the leadership team. This may include consultative support and guidance to other team members regarding their portfolio responsibilities.

What you need to succeed

No less than 5 years’ relevant work experience.
Previous experience in a financial or commercial management role in a business backed by an institutional investor, or demonstrable track record of operating as a business partner to achieve profitable business growth (e.g. turnaround, restructure, M&A or organic expansion).
Experience of working with SME environments and entrepreneurial management teams aiming for growth.
Knowledge and understanding of corporate finance transactions (equity and debt funding).
A proactive approach and ability to multi-task and work to deadlines with minimum of supervision.
Strong communication and influencing skills and experience of managing multiple stakeholders.
Resilient and resourceful when facing challenging situations with investee businesses.
Exhibit ability to solve problems with commercial acumen.
Strong financial modelling and written communication skills.
