Position: Portfolio Manager

We are currently recruiting for a Portfolio Manager to join our North East team. This role will report directly to the Partner responsible for the region.

The key purpose of this role is to drive value creation within the private company investment portfolio by providing strategic support and guidance to investee company management teams with the overall aim of increasing shareholder value and realising successful exits. This will include; monitoring growth and cash requirements against plan, challenging strategy, supporting the delivery of value creation plans and utilising professional network contacts where appropriate, with the overall aim of increasing shareholder value. Whilst Maven is a generalist investor, the portfolio will include a number of manufacturing and software businesses.

The role & responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Proactive management of an investee company portfolio ranging from high potential growth businesses in the scaleup phase, through to established SMEs requiring a more strategic approach.
Hands‑on support to portfolio companies requiring direct input and guidance to address specific business opportunities and challenges, including new products and new markets, cost base optimisation, M&A support for bolt‑on acquisitions, new business initiatives and implementation of successful exit strategies.
Attendance at investee company board meetings and meetings with senior management teams to provide strategic support and constructive challenge.
Provide robust and insightful monthly/quarterly updates and reviews of individual and consolidated investee company performance within the portfolio.
Prepare papers for the Maven investment committee for follow‑on funding or amendments to the investment terms.
Attendance of local business networking events to raise Maven’s profile with potential investees and investment intermediaries.
The post holder will carry out any other duties that are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or member of the leadership team. This may include consultative support and guidance to other team members regarding their portfolio responsibilities.

What you need to succeed

No less than 10 years’ relevant work experience.
Previous experience in a senior financial and commercial management role in one or more businesses backed by an institutional investor, or of managing a portfolio of SME investments ideally in PE/VC or high growth environment.
Demonstrable track record of operating as a business partner to achieve profitable business growth (e.g. turnaround, restructure, M&A or organic expansion).
Experience of working with SME environments and entrepreneurial management teams aiming for growth.
Knowledge and understanding of corporate finance transactions (equity and debt funding).
A proactive approach and ability to multi‑task and work to deadlines with minimum of supervision.
Strong communication and influencing skills and experience of managing multiple stakeholders.
Resilient and resourceful when facing challenging situations with investee businesses.
Exhibit ability to solve problems with commercial acumen.
Strong financial modelling and written communication skills.
