Job summary

National Grid is hiring a Lead Policy Engineer to join the Asset Operations Policy Team. This hybrid role sits across substations, overhead lines and operational sites, turning regulatory requirements into practical safety and compliance guidance for frontline operations.

You will lead policy development, coordinate with safety, legal, and procurement teams, brief directors on risks and progress, and deliver training to embed policies across the network.

Qualifications

• Experience developing, implementing or applying operational procedures, standards or policies.
• Sound understanding of UK health and safety legislation.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability translating technical or regulatory requirements into practical guidance.
• Balance compliance with safe, efficient on-site delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, review and implementation of policies and procedures supporting Asset Operations activities across the electricity transmission network.
• Translate legislation, regulatory requirements and company standards into practical guidance for operational teams.
• Provide expert advice on Safety, Health, Environment, Security and Compliance matters to engineers, operational teams and business leaders.
• Support Asset Operations in maintaining compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and National Grid requirements.
• Work collaboratively with stakeholders across Asset Operations, Safety, Assurance, Legal, Asset Management and Procurement.
• Brief senior management and directors on policy developments, risks and implementation activities.
• Develop and support the delivery of training and communications to ensure policies are understood and effectively embedded.
• Review findings from audits, assurance activities, investigations and operational events, ensuring lessons learned are reflected within policies and procedures.
• Chair working groups and lead engagement with key stakeholders to drive continuous improvement across the policy framework.
• Support the delivery of a safe, compliant and resilient operating environment for substations, overhead lines and associated transmission assets.
