Job summary

National Grid is seeking a Lead Policy Engineer to join the Asset Operations Policy Team. This hybrid role supports policy development across substations, overhead lines and operational sites, translating legislation into practical guidance for frontline teams.

You will lead policy creation, review and training, collaborating with engineers, safety specialists and senior leaders to ensure safety, compliance and resilience in the transmission network.

Qualifications

• Understanding of UK health and safety legislation and its application.

Job Purpose

National Grid Electricity Transmission is looking for a Policy Engineer to join our Asset Operations Policy Team. This role sits at the heart of our operational business, ensuring the policies, procedures and standards used across our substations, overhead line networks and operational sites remain safe, compliant and effective. As a subject matter expert, you'll develop and maintain policies covering Safety, Health, Environment, Security and Compliance (SHES), translating legislative and corporate requirements into practical guidance that supports frontline operations. Working closely with operational teams, engineers, safety specialists and senior leaders, you'll help ensure our people can operate and maintain critical electricity transmission assets safely and efficiently. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with operational or engineering experience who wants to influence how Asset Operations manages safety, compliance and risk across the transmission network.

What you'll do

• Lead the development, review and implementation of policies and procedures supporting Asset Operations activities across the electricity transmission network.
• Translate legislation, regulatory requirements and company standards into practical guidance for operational teams.
• Provide expert advice on Safety, Health, Environment, Security and Compliance matters to engineers, operational teams and business leaders.
• Support Asset Operations in maintaining compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and National Grid requirements.
• Work collaboratively with stakeholders across Asset Operations, Safety, Assurance, Legal, Asset Management and Procurement.
• Brief senior management and directors on policy developments, risks and implementation activities.
• Develop and support the delivery of training and communications to ensure policies are understood and effectively embedded.
• Review findings from audits, assurance activities, investigations and operational events, ensuring lessons learned are reflected within policies and procedures.
• Chair working groups and lead engagement with key stakeholders to drive continuous improvement across the policy framework.
• Support the delivery of a safe, compliant and resilient operating environment for substations, overhead lines and associated transmission assets.

About you

You'll have a strong engineering, operational or technical background and understand the challenges of working within a safety-critical infrastructure environment.

You'll also bring:

• Experience developing, implementing or applying operational procedures, standards or policies within an engineering, utilities or infrastructure environment.
• A sound understanding of UK health and safety legislation and its application within operational settings.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation.
• Experience translating technical, legislative or regulatory requirements into practical operational guidance.
• The ability to balance compliance requirements with the realities of delivering work safely and efficiently on site.
• Experience presenting information and providing advice to engineers, managers and senior stakeholders.

We'd be particularly interested in candidates with:

• Experience within electricity transmission, distribution, utilities, infrastructure or a similar asset-intensive sector.
• Knowledge of substation operations, overhead lines, cables or maintenance activities.
• Familiarity with Electricity Safety Rules and operational safety management.
• Experience working on operational sites as an engineer, authorised person, senior authorised person, supervisor or technical specialist.
• Knowledge of environmental compliance, including areas such as oil management, waste management or SF6.
• Experience supporting audits, investigations, technical governance or assurance activities.
