Job summary

Axcis Education Recruitment is seeking a PMLD Teaching Assistant to join a specialist education setting in Caterham, Surrey. The role supports learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties, working closely with teachers and a multidisciplinary team to create a safe, nurturing environment.

You will assist with personalised activities, support personal care, and help implement communication strategies, while monitoring pupil progress and wellbeing in a sensory-rich classroom.

Qualifications

  • Experience with children with PMLD or similar complex needs is essential.
  • Understanding of health & safety, safeguarding and infection control is important.
  • Compassionate, patient and able to build positive relationships with pupils, families and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in planning and delivering individualised learning activities.
  • Support pupils with personal care, feeding, medication administration, and mobility needs.
  • Facilitate communication using augmentative and alternative communication systems.
  • Monitor and record pupils’ progress, behaviour, and health observations.

  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and safeguarding procedures.

Job description

Position: PMLD Teaching Assistant
Location: Caterham, Surrey
Hours: Full-time, Monday‑Friday, 08:00‑15:30
Salary: Paid to scale (National Minimum/ Living Wage rates)

About the role

Caterham provides specialist education and support for learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). The Teaching Assistant works closely with the classroom teacher and multidisciplinary team to deliver a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that promotes each pupil’s development and wellbeing.

Key responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher in planning and delivering individualised learning activities.
  • Support pupils with personal care, feeding, medication administration, and mobility needs.
  • Facilitate communication using augmentative and alternative communication systems.
  • Monitor and record pupils’ progress, behaviour, and health observations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sensory-rich classroom environment.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and safeguarding procedures.
Essential requirements
  • Experience or training working with children with PMLD or similar complex needs.
  • Relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2/3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent).
  • Good understanding of health & safety, safeguarding, and infection control.
  • Compassionate, patient, and able to build positive relationships with pupils, families, and staff.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work the full schedule.
Desirable
  • First Aid/Paediatric CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and sensory equipment.

Salary / Pay Rate will be dependent on your skills and experience.
