Job summary

Sodexo Group is recruiting a Plumber/Fitter for our Facilities Management team at HMP Northumberland. This hands-on role covers installation, inspection, maintenance and repair across the prison’s plumbing and mechanical systems, ensuring a safe, secure and fit-for-purpose environment.

You will work both independently and with a wider team, taking part in on-call duties and contributing to site improvements while adhering to health and safety standards.

Qualifications

• A recognised apprenticeship and relevant trade qualification.
• Practical experience in plumbing and maintenance.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision and in a team.
• Proactive and systematic approach to completing tasks.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance to plumbing, heating, ventilation and hot and cold water systems.
• Inspect, test and examine onsite systems and equipment.
• Diagnose faults and troubleshoot using testing equipment.
• Carry out plumbing repairs and replace building services equipment and fixtures.
• Undertake general maintenance and minor mechanical works, including basic electrical tasks where appropriate.
• Read and interpret technical diagrams and manufacturer instructions.
• Maintain records of maintenance, inspections, testing and repair work.
• Identify and report defective or substandard equipment.

About the role

Are you a qualified Plumber / Fitter looking for arewarding role where you can use your trade skills to make a real difference?

Sodexo is looking for a skilled and motivated Plumber/ Fitter to join our Facilities Management team at HMP Northumberland.

In this hands‑on role, you will carry outinstallation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair work across theprison. You’ll play an important part in maintaining the site’s facilities andinfrastructure, helping to ensure the environment remains safe, secure and fitfor purpose.

You’ll work both independently and as part of a widerteam, using your technical knowledge and practical skills to deliverhigh-quality maintenance services.

What you’ll be doing

As a Plumber / Fitter, your responsibilities willinclude:

• Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance to plumbing, heating, ventilation and hot and cold water systems.
• Inspecting, testing and examining onsite systems and equipment.
• Diagnosing faults and troubleshooting issues using appropriate testing equipment.
• Carrying out plumbing repairs and replacing building services equipment and fixtures.
• Undertaking general maintenance and minor mechanical works, including some basic electrical tasks where appropriate.
• Reading and interpreting technical diagrams, schematics, manufacturer instructions and operational documentation.
• Carrying out preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing of plumbing and mechanical systems.
• Maintaining accurate records of all maintenance, inspections, testing and repair work.
• Identifying and reporting defective or substandard equipment.
• Supporting improvements to the condition and decency standards across the site.
• Working alongside specialist contractors and, where required, escorting contractors around the prison.
• Taking part in an out-of-hours on-call rota and responding appropriately to maintenance requirements.
• Undertaking additional duties that contribute to the effective operation of the prison.
• Working in accordance with all relevant legislation, trade standards, Health & Safety requirements and Sodexo policies and procedures.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is technically capable,proactive and takes pride in delivering work to a high standard.

You’ll need:

• A recognised apprenticeship and relevant trade qualification.
• Practical experience in plumbing and maintenance.
• The ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as effectively within a team.
• A proactive and systematic approach to completing tasks.
• The ability to work to agreed schedules, priorities and deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• A positive and proactive approach to Health & Safety.
• The ability to read and understand technical diagrams and manufacturer instructions.
• Confidence using appropriate tools and testing equipment.
• The physical capability to undertake a hands‑on maintenance role, including working in confined spaces, climbing, standing and working for extended periods where required.
• A willingness to undertake additional training and develop your skill set, including potential training such as a locksmith course to support the wider maintenance requirements of the site.
