Job summary

The University of Manchester is seeking a Platform Engineer to lead the design, build and maintenance of cloud platforms and automation. You will work with Platform Engineering, Cloud Architects and Research colleagues to deliver CI/CD and scalable infrastructure within education-focused programs.

You will collaborate across developers, UX designers and Scrum Master, contributing to self-service cloud tooling and AI/ML initiatives while pursuing cloud certifications and a structured career path.

Qualifications

• Hands-on with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS/OCI) in complex engagements.
• IaC automation using Terraform to deliver cloud infrastructure.
• Experience managing code repositories (GitLab/GitHub/Bitbucket).
• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automation.
• Scripting skills in PowerShell, Python or Golang.
• Knowledge of architecture design and documentation techniques.
• Familiarity with security standards (PCI DSS, ISO, NIST).
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

About IT Services

IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers.

The Team

The role is within the Platform Engineering Team, the key team developing our cloud platforms and supporting migration to cloud through reusable Infrastructure as Code libraries.

Our Platform Engineers design, build and maintain the delivery infrastructure, systems and processes underpinning technology transformation engagements and lead the adoption of modern platforms and ways of working.

The Role

We're looking for a Platform Engineer who has a broad understanding of cloud, and a deep understanding of at least one major cloud platform. You will collaborate closely with the wider Platform Engineering Team, Cloud Architects and colleagues in Research to deliver exciting digital programmes in the education sector.

The University has a clearly defined IT digital roadmap and as a cloud expert, you'll work in the Platform Engineering team alongside developers, architects, UX designers, analysts and Scrum Master to deliver DevOps CI/CD, automation and cloud infrastructure.

You'll work especially closely with our colleagues in Research, helping to define and develop self-service cloud infrastructure, supporting AI/ML implementations and accelerating the pace of moving from ideation to active research.

The Person

You’ll have the expertise and confidence to lead the definition and support of the Azure, AWS delivery platform in complex engagements, typically working in multi-disciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the below skills and experience:

• Hands on with any of Oracle OCI, Azure or AWS
• Automating delivery of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) via Terraform
• Code Repository Management (e.g. GitLab, GitHub, Bitbucket)
• Deep understanding of CI/CD pipeline
• Scripting with one or more of the following: PowerShell, Python, Golang
• Understanding of architecture design and documentation
• Understanding of Security Compliance PCI DSS, ISO, Cyber Essentials, NIST
• Excellent communication and written skills.

Desirable Criteria

• Familiarity with collaboration suites i.e. Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence)
• Experience of building automation/integrations with Service NOW.
• Key stakeholder management and collaborative working with wider teams.
