Job summary

Masstemps Ltd is seeking an experienced Plasma Cutter to join a busy manufacturing site near Wednesbury. You will set and operate CNC plasma cutting machines, read engineering drawings, and ensure high-quality steel profiles are produced.

The role requires careful setting of speeds, amperage, gas flow and torch height, with a focus on accurate cuts and efficient production. Safety around heavy steel and CNC machinery is essential.

Qualifications

• Experience operating a CNC plasma cutting machine in steel fabrication/engineering.
• Experience with S3 Viper or similar CNC plasma cutting machine is advantageous.
• Good understanding of plasma cutting processes and machine settings.
• Experience cutting mild steel plate across thicknesses.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, cutting plans and measurements.
• Experience setting speeds, amperage, gas flow and torch height for quality cuts.
• Identify and rectify cutting issues like dross, edge quality and dimensions.
• Carry out basic quality checks and dimensional measurements.
• Comfort using grinders and hand tools to finish cuts.
• Knowledge of safe operation around CNC machinery and plasma cutting equipment.

• Set and operate an plasma cutting machines to produce steel profiles and components.
• Load and position steel plate accurately onto the cutting bed.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, cutting plans and job specifications.
• Select the correct cutting settings, including amperage, gas, speed and torch height, according to material thickness.
• Monitor the cutting process and identify issues such as poor cuts, excessive dross or incorrect dimensions.
• Carry out quality checks and dimensional inspections on finished profiles.
• Remove, sort and identify completed components ready for the next stage of production.
• Use grinders and other hand tools to remove dross, sharp edges and imperfections where required.
• Perform routine checks on the machine, including consumables, torch condition and cutting equipment.
• Complete production paperwork and maintain accurate records of completed work.

ABOUT YOU

• Previous experience operating a CNC plasma cutting machine within a steel fabrication or engineering environment.
• Experience operating an S3 Viper or similar CNC plasma cutting machine would be highly advantageous.
• Good understanding of plasma cutting processes and machine settings.
• Experience cutting mild steel plate across a range of thicknesses.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, cutting plans and measurements.
• Experience setting cutting speeds, amperage, gas flow and torch height to achieve a good-quality cut.
• Able to identify and rectify common cutting issues such as dross, poor edge quality, incorrect dimensions and excessive heat distortion.
• Experience carrying out basic quality checks and dimensional measurements.
• Comfortable using grinders and other hand tools to finish cut components.
• Good understanding of working safely around CNC machinery, plasma cutting equipment and heavy steel.
