Job summary

Tata Steel UK is seeking a Shift Manager for the Building systems department in Shotton. The role involves planning and overseeing shift operations to ensure production targets are met while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Key responsibilities include leadership of the shift team, adherence to the Daily Management System, problem solving, and continuous improvement initiatives across plant operations. Closing date is 23 September 2026, with interviews the following week.

Qualifications

• Minimum Level 5 qualification in Engineering, Science, Leadership & Management, Safety, Materials, Business, or a related discipline.
• NEBOSH Certificate (minimum IOSH qualification) or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• Significant experience in plant operations and manufacturing leadership, ideally across multiple operational areas or sites.
• Demonstrable experience leading teams, delivering operational performance, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives in a manufacturing or industrial environment.

Responsibilities

• Plan, manage and oversee operational activities for a shift to ensure production goals are met in line with safety, quality and performance standards.
• Own all aspects of people management for the assigned shift and align with parallel shift teams.
• Drive operational excellence by ensuring compliance with the Daily Management System and leading process audits.
• Coordinate shift operations, optimise resources, and balance priorities for safe, efficient delivery.
• Act as the on-site responsible person during out-of-hours operations and liaise with senior management.
• Deliver production targets by working with cross-functional teams and meeting KPIs, quality, timescales and safety requirements.
• Monitor and analyse performance, identify risks and opportunities, and implement improvements.
• Coach teams to identify root causes and implement countermeasures and escalate where needed.
• Coordinate planned maintenance and improvement projects to maximise plant availability and efficiency.
• Lead, coach and motivate shift teams to promote a high-performance culture.
• Ensure robust shift handovers and clear documentation of operational information.
• Champion safety culture by leading investigations and challenging unsafe behaviours.
• Build relationships with internal stakeholders and support cross-functional projects to deliver objectives on schedule.
