Job Summary

As a Physician Associate, you will act within your professional boundaries, providing patient care from initial history taking, clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation under the supervision of a GP. You will demonstrate safe clinical decision-making and deliver expert care in consultation with the relevant GP.

Main duties of the job

Your work will aim to improve patient outcomes, reduce health inequalities, enhance the efficiency of general practice, and deliver a high-quality service.

Mentorship and supervision will be provided by designated medical personnel, with the level and type depending on your skills and knowledge, as determined by the organisation's clinical governance arrangements. You will follow annual appraisals and CPD guidelines set by the Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA).

You will be a core part of the growing MDT, providing services to registered patients.

Scope and purpose of the role

  • Deliver high-standard patient care using advanced autonomous clinical skills, in-depth theoretical knowledge, and evidence-based practice under GP supervision.
  • Manage a clinical caseload and address patient needs.
  • Provide clinical leadership within the MDT and support team development of clinical skills.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

  • Provide first contact for patients with undifferentiated problems, using history taking, physical exams, and clinical decision-making to establish diagnoses and management plans in partnership with patients.
  • Conduct consultations (in person, video, telephone) for emergencies or routine issues, including long-term condition management.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests within your scope, discussing results with patients.
  • Follow clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practices.
  • Offer holistic patient and family support, emphasizing prevention and self-care.
  • Refer patients to other services or agencies via appropriate pathways.
  • Ensure safe handovers of care within and outside the practice.
  • Collaborate with the MDT and support integrated, patient-centered care within primary and social care networks.
  • Identify community health needs and contribute to developing strategies to address them.

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate Physician Associate qualification (PG Diploma or MSc)
  • Bachelor's degree in Life Science, Biomedical, Nursing, or Allied Health Science
  • Registration with the Faculty of Physician Associates and/or GMC (once statutory regulation is implemented)
  • Passed UK PA National Re-Certification Exam within six years
  • Evidence of CPD relevant to the role

Experience

  • In-depth knowledge of medical conditions, treatments, and pharmacology
  • Experience supporting doctors in clinical decisions
  • Ability to work autonomously within supervised practice
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, data protection, and information governance
  • Continual learning and development evidence

Desirable Experience

  • Recent UK GP experience
  • Management of complex patient needs
  • Preventative medicine and chronic disease management experience
  • Experience with QOF standards
