Job summary

Academics is working with a primary school in Torfaen that is looking for a One-to-One Support Assistant to join them from September 2026. You will provide focused, individual support to a pupil to access the curriculum and participate confidently in lessons.

Working alongside the class teacher, you will help with phonics, reading, writing and maths, encourage independence and adapt approaches as needed to suit the pupil. DBS and EWC registration are required or pursued.

Qualifications

• Previous one-to-one support experience is desirable.
• Commitment to helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.
• Ability to adapt approach to individual pupil needs.
• Patience, consistency and a positive attitude when supporting children.
• Strong communication and collaboration with teaching staff.
• Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain).
• Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC).
• Two recent professional references.

Responsibilities

• Provide consistent one-to-one support to a pupil to access the curriculum.
• Assist with phonics, reading, writing and maths as required.
• Help the pupil develop independence and confidence.
• Work closely with the class teacher to understand needs and plan support.
• Help the pupil feel included in lessons and everyday school activities.
• Maintain patience and adapt approaches as needed.
