Permit Office Lead – Safety, Compliance & Systems

Job summary

Wellcome Genome Campus is seeking an experienced Permit Office Manager to lead the Permit Office on-site at Saffron Walden. You will own the Permit to Work function, ensure safety and compliance, and manage contractor onboarding and CPP reviews.

The role requires a strong engineering/M&E background, UK H&S knowledge, CDM expertise, and proven leadership. You will drive system improvements and coordinate with facilities and visiting contractors to maintain safe operations.

Qualifications

• Strong background in Engineering, Construction or M&E with proven permit-to-work experience.
• Excellent knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, CDM regulations and risk management.
• Experience managing statutory compliance on a complex site.
• Strong understanding of QHSE systems.
• IT skills with Outlook, Word and Excel; experience with Aconex or Buzzsaw.
• Experience managing or overseeing large and small projects.
• Proven leadership, organisational and motivational skills.
• Experience carrying out H&S audits and reviews.
• NEBOSH General/Construction Certificate (or equivalent).

Responsibilities

• Lead the Permit Office team to deliver an efficient, compliant operation.
• Oversee the permit lifecycle from creation to close-out and inductions.
• Ensure contractors are inducted and compliant with CDM requirements.
• Maintain a live campus map of active permits and transfers of control.
• Own the electronic Permit to Work system and drive improvements.
• Collaborate with Estates, IT and facilities to ensure system uptime.
• Engage stakeholders to ensure safe, timely project delivery.
