Perioperative Quality Improvement Nurse

The role of the Perioperative Quality Improvement Nurse will be to assist the with Quality Improvement work for Surgery, and work with Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme Leads in the recruitment of research participants for a national quality improvement initiative led by the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's Health Service Research Centre (NIAA-HSRC).

The aim of Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP) is to measure and report on potential complications and post-operative outcomes associated with major surgery. The information collected through PQIP is used locally by doctors, nurses and medical researchers to focus and drive quality improvement projects which will lead to improved patient safety and patient experience.

The post holder will be required to work autonomously and collaboratively across the MDTs to aid the patient and service quality improvements.

Main duties of the job

To use relevant clinical knowledge to identify patients suitable for clinical research following PQIP's inclusion and exclusion criteria.

To be responsible and accountable for capturing eligible patients, completion of data episodes for central submission and the timely coordination of patient/participant PQIP inclusion. Aspects of this include Identification, consent, recruitment, data collection and follow-up of research patients/participants guided by PQIP local leads and the UCL PQIP group.

To be able to work autonomously undertaking a wide range of duties relating to Quality Improvement Work, PQIP and clinical audit, backed up by professional skills and knowledge.

To conduct research practices that conform to the National Institute for Health and Care Research's (NIHR) Good Clinical Practice (GCP) international ethical, scientific, and practical standards.

Ensure that all documentation and data is completed promptly and accurately, and that all information is stored and maintained appropriately.

To provide engagement and support for additional departmental research, audit, and quality improvement projects.

A willingness to work across Hospital sites (Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital.)

Job responsibilities

Communication

  • To be a point of contact for Clinicians, Research Participants, members of the Perioperative MDT and any other member of UH Sussex East throughout the duration of the PQIP research study.
  • Assist clinicians in recording and storing data for audit and research purposes.
  • Plan, manage and prioritise a complex workload, communicating with the PQIP team to reorganise work as necessary.

Service Delivery and Improvement

To use research findings to develop evidence-based/best practices.

To plan and undertake the evaluation of practice and performance through clinical audit and studies and make recommendations for change and clinical effectiveness programmes.

Use IT systems and databases as required within the role of research.

People Management and Development

Attend relevant local, regional and national meetings specific to PQIP and other relevant departmental research and/or audits.

Plays an integral role in the conduct of PQIP using leadership skills to oversee, facilitate and coordinate daily activities, delegating tasks to other staff including junior doctors and local PQIP Team members as appropriate.

Actively participate and feedback on a regular basis, to senior management, on the progress and delivery of PQIP, clinical audit and QI projects

Regularly facilitates dissemination of data across UH Sussex East to appropriate directorates and specialties where it is clinically relevant.

Ensure that all persons involved with PQIP have met training requirements in accordance with NIHR GCP and are familiar with recruitment, consenting and data collection processes for PQIP at UH Sussex East

To liaise with, and co-ordinate information between PQIP Team members in order to ensure consistency in the approach to compliance of relevant legislation, national guidance, and UHSussex research Standard Operating Procedures.

Maintain appropriate patient/service and research records and monitor the standards of those of the team.

Ensure collection of accurate local data and delivery to clinical trial centres in a timely manner always adhering to the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Adhere to all local standard operating procedures and policies.

Understand the wider departmental and organisational aims and priorities by engaging positively with the service and its users.

Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical and research governance and risk management and ensure its effective application to the workplace with guidance from departmental management when needed.

To provide complex information in a format the patient understands and answer questions fully for the patient to make an informed decision.

To demonstrate excellent prioritising and time management skills to meet the unpredictable and conflicting needs of the service.

Patient Care Delivery

To work at all times in accordance with the regulations as described in Good Clinical Practice and relevant legislations, and to the most current guidance relating to Research Governance and Research Ethics.

Demonstrate knowledge of the pre-clinical data and specific rationale for clinical research.

Ensure that practice is in accordance with the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and other appropriate NMC/HCPC and statutory guidelines.
