Perinatal Nursery Nurse – Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust

The Essex Perinatal Mental Health Service has successfully established a new specialist service in the community over the last eight years. This is an opportunity for Band 4 Nursery Nurses to join our dedicated and growing team of experts in this field. The service operates from five hubs across north and south Essex. The current vacancy covers the NE and mid Hub, with base options in Chelmsford or Colchester. The post holders will contribute Nursery Nurse expertise and interventions to the delivery of specialist community perinatal mental health care to women across Essex and will help shape how the role benefits women and their families. This role also involves service development to improve delivery of care and clinical practice within a multi-disciplinary team framework with our Perinatal Leadership Team, Practitioners, Perinatal Psychology workforce, Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrists, Support workers, Social workers and Occupational Therapists.

Successful candidates will need to demonstrate experience of working with mothers with mental health difficulties and sound child safeguarding practice. Good communication, collaborative partnership working, time management and planning skills are essential. Ability to travel is essential; candidates must hold a valid driving licence and daily use of a vehicle.

Main duties of the job
  • To work as a member of the Perinatal Mental Health Service, assisting in the provision of interventions to meet the needs of the infants of women receiving our specialist service, promoting and supporting the health of the woman, infant and family.
  • To provide an effective and supportive nursery nurse service to women in the antenatal and postnatal period within a perinatal mental health setting.
  • Support parents and other Perinatal Mental Health Service clinicians to ensure the emotional and practical care of infants and to monitor developmental progress.
  • To ensure a caring and stimulating environment for infants or children in their home environment.
  • To work in partnership with families and wider community nursing teams (e.g., Midwives, Health Visitors, Community staff nurses, Community Nursery Nurses), supporting parents in their journey to recovery.

Job responsibilities
  • To support the work of the Perinatal Mental Health Service through the provision of high quality, evidence-based nursery nursing care interventions to mothers and infants who meet the eligibility criteria under the supervision of clinical clinicians or qualified Allied Health Professionals.
  • To work with other Perinatal Mental Health Service clinicians, providing nursery nursing input to a defined group of mothers across Chelmsford and Colchester, their babies and families, providing support and assistance in both antenatal and postnatal periods.
  • To work collaboratively within the wider Perinatal Mental Health Service team, complementing the ongoing interventions of clinicians and ensuring the infant’s welfare is paramount at all times.
  • To work collaboratively with the mother and provide specialist clinical interventions to clients, infants and families experiencing perinatal mental illness.
  • To ensure an assessment of the baby or children is conducted and documented upon every contact.
  • To ensure regular monitoring of physical health and developmental milestones are undertaken in conjunction with the Health Visiting service.

To ensure that a mother’s involvement is fully promoted and that she is consulted about the care being given to her baby or children.

Person Specification
  • Degree in childcare: qualification in degree or equivalent in Nursery Nursing; experience of working with perinatal mental health.
  • Experience of working with children: experience working with children under the age of 2 years; previous health visiting team experience.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check: This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure to the DBS.
