Job overview

The Cellular Pathology team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has a vacancy for an experienced State Registered Biomedical Scientist or Specialist BMS, with banding and pay dependent on qualifications, knowledge, and experience. You must be well-motivated, experienced, and enthusiastic to join our busy yet friendly team.

The department handles 44,000 surgical and diagnostic requests annually across two sites (Luton & Dunstable Hospital & Bedford Hospital). As the Bedfordshire Hospital Trusts forms a large general hospital, we see a wide variety of tissue and diagnostic cytology specimens, including post mortem work.

The main Cellular Pathology Laboratory is based at Bedford Hospital, with shifts at Luton & Dunstable site expected. Digital Pathology is being implemented.

Pathology has full UKAS accreditation, HTA & MHRA compliance.

You should have a good general histology background to IBMS Specialist Diploma level, including knowledge of special techniques like immunohistochemistry.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the day-to-day operations and technical aspects of the service.
  • Support the senior laboratory BMS in delivering a high-quality, efficient, and effective service through the Quality Management System [QMS].
  • Implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with UKAS standards, legislation, and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in training and developing scientific and support staff.

Experience

  • Significant knowledge of Cellular Pathology techniques within a UK laboratory
  • Experience with audit, evaluation, and information governance

Qualifications

  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, with demonstrable BMS-level experience
  • HCPC State Registration
  • Master’s degree or related professional qualification (FIBMS or Chartered Scientist) or equivalent
