Job summary

JD Sports Fashion PLC in Bury is seeking a Payroll Team Leader to oversee payroll delivery for 30,000+ colleagues. You will lead up to three Payroll Executives, coach the team, and partner with Payroll Managers, an Assistant Manager and other Leads to ensure accurate, compliant payroll processing.

The role emphasises coaching, quality oversight and continuous improvement within a fast-paced payroll environment, with strong focus on collaboration across People Services, Finance and Operations.

Qualifications

• Experience leading payroll or shared services teams.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation.
• Excellent organisation and time management.
• People-focused with clear guidance and support.
• Desire to learn and drive payroll improvements.
• Experience mentoring payroll staff.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day payroll delivery within the team, ensuring accuracy and timely processing per controls and legal requirements.
• Manage and prioritise team workloads to meet deadlines and service levels.
• Own quality and accuracy of outputs, promoting best practice.
• Coach and develop Payroll Associates and Executives through guidance and feedback.
• Monitor payroll queries and errors, implementing proactive solutions to reduce repeats.
• Act as escalation point for complex pay queries and coordinate with managers and stakeholders.
