Payroll & Pension Specialist

We are looking for a passionate Payroll Specialist who will report directly to the Payroll Supervisor for day-to-day activities and will be accountable to the Head of Payroll for overall responsibilities. In this role, they will support the Payroll team, mentor junior members, and ensure the accurate and timely processing of salary payments. Additionally, the Payroll Specialist will play a key role in identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance payroll efficiency and effectiveness.

The Role:

  • Process UK payrolls accurately, ensuring fixed and variable data is correct, changes are actioned on time, and employees are paid correctly.
  • Ensure payroll deductions, including taxes, are processed accurately and paid to third parties within legal deadlines.
  • Manage pension schemes, including accurate payments, compliance with Auto Enrolment legislation, audits, refunds, and reporting.
  • Perform monthly audits for Auto Enrolment compliance, process opt-outs, and generate worker status reports.
  • Complete PSA and P11D processes, maintain accurate records, and support year-end reporting (e.g., P60s).
  • Respond to payroll queries from employees, Finance, HMRC, local authorities, and pension providers.
  • Maintain and update the holiday pay module, ensuring timely monthly reports and payments.
  • Support overseas payrolls by reviewing data submissions, arranging bank uploads, and liaising with vendors.
  • Mentor junior team members and actively contribute to team objectives.
  • Regularly audit payroll documentation to ensure compliance, provide data for internal/external audits, and maintain governance standards.
  • Assess and improve payroll processes, document control procedures, and assist in modernising workflows for smoother operations.
  • Foster positive working relationships across teams and ensure confidentiality in line with Data Protection policies.

The Person:

  • Has experience of payroll & pensions with a proven track record of success in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, particularly Excel to an advanced level.
  • Adaptable systems experience.
  • Pensions Knowledge.
  • End-to-end payroll experience with a depth of knowledge.
  • Payroll Legislation.
  • Payroll Year End.
  • P11D & PSA Knowledge.
  • Exceptional multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Expertise in payroll systems, legislation, and end-to-end processes, including year-end, P11D, and PSA.
