Ellison Institute seeks a detailed-oriented Bioinformatician to join our Pathogen Project in Oxford. You will analyze and validate metagenomic data, develop reproducible workflows, and work closely with wet-lab scientists to translate sequencing data into actionable insights.

This hybrid role combines research with clinical impact and opportunities to advance infectious disease genomics.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in Bioinformatics or related field.
• Hands-on NGS data analysis experience, ideally in metagenomics.
• Understanding metagenomic analysis challenges and interpretation.
• Strong Python and Bash; R desirable.
• Exposure to workflow systems like Nextflow and container tech.
• Clear communicator and team‑oriented problem solver.

Responsibilities

• Develop reproducible bioinformatics workflows for WGS and metagenomic data, including QC, assembly, taxonomic classification, AMR prediction, variant analysis and strain characterisation.
• Support interpretation of complex sequencing datasets, accounting for contamination, mixed organisms, host background and ambiguous taxonomic assignments.
• Use scripting and good programming practices to develop reliable, reproducible bioinformatics solutions and share expertise with colleagues.
• Stay current with advances in infectious disease genomics and metagenomic analytics, suggesting incremental improvements to workflows.
• Engage in a collaborative, inclusive and high-performing team environment by sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues.
