Job summary

Telford College is seeking a compassionate Pastoral & Wellbeing Officer to join the BeSafe team, delivering safeguarding, welfare and pastoral support to learners. The role involves mentoring, interventions and guidance, plus contributing to tutorial delivery.

You will work with agencies, maintain confidential records, provide IAG, support wellbeing and progression, and help foster an inclusive student experience. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant field or equivalent qualification.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding/Child Protection training completed within last 2 years.
  • Level 2 Maths and English qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a level 3 Safeguarding Officer for the college.
  • Manage a caseload of safeguarding concerns and referrals.
  • Work with multi-agency partners to coordinate student support.
  • Promote safeguarding and keeping safe across college including apprenticeships and off-site provision.
  • Maintain confidential GDPR-compliant safeguarding records.
  • Provide advice and guidance to staff on safeguarding procedures.
  • Support welfare arrangements during and after safeguarding incidents.
  • Support risk assessments relating to safeguarding concerns.
  • Provide 1:1 and group mentoring and pastoral support to students.
  • Offer IAG on academic and personal issues and progression routes.
  • Collaborate with curriculum and student services to support learners.
  • Contribute to positive inclusive student experience and EDI commitments.
  • Respond promptly to enquiries and provide customer service.
  • Monitor ProSolution and website enquiries and support enrolment.
  • Lead role in supporting internal student progression and retention targets.
  • Support enrolment, induction, open events, taster days, and new student activities (evenings/weekends).
  • Support safeguarding Manager in all aspects of safeguarding and student welfare.
  • Contribute to review and development of Student Services policies and procedures.

Job description

About The Role

Telford College is seeking a compassionate and proactive Pastoral & Wellbeing Officer to join our BeSafe team, supporting students across the college to achieve their full potential. This is a rewarding opportunity to deliver high-quality safeguarding, welfare and pastoral support, working directly with learners through mentoring, targeted interventions and advice and guidance. You will support the delivery of the tutorial programme and deliver targeted interventions to students both in groups and on a 1:1 basis, while managing safeguarding concerns, working with multi-agency partners, and promoting wellbeing, engagement, retention and progression within a positive and inclusive college environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a level 3 Safeguarding Officer for the college.
  • Manage a caseload of universal- vulnerable level safeguarding concerns and referrals, ensuring timely and effective responses in line with statutory guidance and college policy.
  • Work collaboratively with agencies to ensure coordinated support for students.
  • Promote a college-wide culture of safeguarding and “keeping safe”, including apprenticeships and off-site provision.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and GDPR-compliant safeguarding records.
  • Provide advice and guidance to staff on safeguarding procedures, including appropriate use of CPOMS, SENSO, and ProMonitor.
  • Ensure appropriate welfare arrangements are in place for students and staff during and following safeguarding incidents.
  • Support and monitor risk assessments relating to safeguarding concerns.
  • Provide both 1:1 and group mentoring and pastoral support to students, promoting wellbeing, attendance, and retention.
  • Offer Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) to students on academic and personal issues, progression routes, and next steps.
  • Work closely with colleagues across both curriculum and students support to ensure that identified learners are supported to achieve their potential.
  • Contribute to the development of a positive and inclusive student experience, supporting the college’s equality, diversity, and inclusion commitments.
  • Respond promptly to all enquiries (phone, email, in-person) and provide an excellent level of customer service.
  • Monitor and respond to ProSolution and website enquiries, promoting applications and supporting conversion from enquiry to enrolment.
  • Take a lead role in supporting internal student progression, ensuring college targets for retention and progression are met.
  • Support enrolment, induction, open events, taster days, and new student activities as required (including occasional evenings and weekends).
  • Support the safeguarding Manager in all aspects of safeguarding and student welfare.
  • Contribute to the review and development of Student Services policies and procedures.
Skills And Expertise
  • Experience supporting young people or vulnerable adults in an educational or pastoral setting
  • Experience responding to safeguarding and welfare concerns in line with legislation and policy
  • Experience providing pastoral/mentoring support to promote wellbeing, attendance and progression
  • Experience maintaining confidential records and working with multi-agency partners
  • Strong understanding of KCSIE, Working Together to Safeguard Children, safeguarding processes and GDPR
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship building skills
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workload, prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and promoting student wellbeing
Qualification & Training
  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant field
  • Level 3 Safeguarding/Child Protection training (within the last 2 years)
  • Level 2 Maths and English
  • Additional relevant training such as Prevent, EDI, Trauma-Informed Practice, Mental Health First Aid or IAG (Desirable)
