Job summary

The King Alfred School in Somerset seeks a Pastoral Support Officer to work with pastoral leads and Heads of Year, fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment. You will support student behaviour, attendance and wellbeing, acting as a visible contact across the school and collaborating with attendance and safeguarding teams.

Your role involves liaising with parents and external agencies, keeping confidential records, and participating in intervention meetings to enhance pastoral processes.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting students in a school setting or similar environment.
• Strong IT skills with databases and office software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with attention to detail.
• Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection legislation.

Responsibilities

Job description

As a Pastoral Support Officer at The King Alfred School, you will play a vital role in supporting our pastoral leads and Heads of Year to foster a positive, safe and inclusive learning environment. Serving as a visible point of contact across the school, you will directly support student behaviour, attendance and overall wellbeing. Your daily responsibilities will include:

• Reviewing and responding to student-centred concerns throughout the school day, gathering incident evidence and delivering tailored support for vulnerable students under lead staff guidance.
• Maintaining a supportive, visible presence during social times and participating in daily support rotas to assist teaching colleagues in managing positive classroom environments.
• Communicating effectively with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure positive student outcomes and wellbeing, as well as collaborating with attendance and safeguarding teams.
• Maintaining accurate, confidential records and logs, attending key intervention meetings and assisting in the continuous enhancement of pastoral processes.
  We are looking for a dedicated, empathetic and organised individual who is passionate about supporting young people to thrive., A good standard of education (including Maths and English),Strong IT proficiency in databases and general software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with high attention to detail, alongside the ability to build strong, positive relationships with pupils, parents, staff and third parties.
• Confidence in handling fast-paced, emotive situations, managing conflict constructively and remaining calm, resilient and patient under pressure.
• Experience working in a busy, varied environment, with a proactive attitude toward managing student behaviour and supporting vulnerable groups.
• Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection legislation, high professional standards, strict adherence to confidentiality and a commitment to acting as a positive role model for students.
• a First Aid qualification would be desirable, or a willingness to work towards it.
