Job summary

Sandwell College is seeking a dedicated Pastoral Mentor to join our Central Student Services team on a full-time, permanent basis. The role focuses on mentoring 16 to 18-year-old students, helping them achieve academically and emotionally while improving attendance and behaviour.

You will work with Programme Achievement Managers, monitor attendance, and maintain detailed records. The position offers engaging development opportunities within a supportive college environment during term time.

Qualifications

  • Hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Hold a mentor Qualification or be prepared to train for one.
  • Hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Maths and English.
  • Experience of mentoring young learners.
  • Experience of supporting learners in an educational environment (desirable).
  • Experience of working within a team.
  • Experience of working to pressure and tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personalised mentoring to students and small groups, setting clear goals and tracking progress.
  • Work with Programme Achievement Managers to support students who may be struggling in their studies.
  • Use college systems to monitor attendance, offer guidance, and encourage students to take ownership of their attendance—especially in English and maths classes.
  • Inspire and motivate learners to succeed while helping them build resilience and accountability.
  • Maintain detailed records of student meetings, contracts, and progress using assessment tool.
  • Spot student needs early, foster a positive and respectful environment, and refer concerns to safeguarding or specialist services when needed.

Description

We are looking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic, and proactive Pastoral Mentor to join our Pastoral team on a full time, permanent basis working 40 week term time only.

This role plays a key part in supporting our students to achieve their full potential. We require a driven individual with the coaching ability to mentor and support 16 to 18-year-old students to achieve and develop academically and emotionally. You will act as a trusted point of contact, helping learners build the confidence and resilience they need to improve their attendance, retention, and behaviour. Key Responsibilities
