Job description

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Part-Time SEN Teaching Assistant to join our supportive team at a specialist Special Educational Needs provision in Carlisle. This is a part-time position perfect for someone who wants to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with additional needs while working in an environment that fosters learning and personal development.

As a Part-Time SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be working with students who have a range of learning difficulties, including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), speech and language delays, and physical disabilities. The role will require both classroom-based support as well as some personal care duties, depending on the specific needs of the children.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide tailored support to students with Special Educational Needs, ensuring their engagement in classroom activities and participation in learning.
  2. Assist the class teacher in the delivery of differentiated lessons, adjusting teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of the students.
  3. Offer one-to-one support or work in small groups with students who need extra assistance, providing guidance and encouragement.
  4. Support the development of students’ communication, social skills, and independence, using appropriate strategies and resources.
  5. Help with personal care tasks when needed, such as feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance.
  6. Collaborate closely with other staff, including teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals, to create and implement Individual Education Plans and behavioural support plans.
  7. Promote positive behaviour and provide emotional support, maintaining a calm and consistent approach to student needs.
  8. Assist with classroom management, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.
  9. Contribute to the development of classroom resources, including sensory materials and visual aids, to enhance student engagement.
The Ideal Candidate:
  1. Experience: Previous experience in a similar role or working with children or adults with special educational needs, whether in a classroom or care setting. Experience with children with ASD, ADHD, or other complex needs is highly desirable.
  2. Qualifications: A Teaching Assistant (TA) qualification or a related care qualification.
  3. Personal Qualities: Kind, empathetic, and patient. A proactive individual who is committed to supporting children in achieving their best.
  4. Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are essential, both with students and other professionals. The ability to communicate effectively with children, especially those with speech and language difficulties, is important.
  5. Classroom Experience: Experience supporting students in a classroom setting, ideally in a SEN environment, would be beneficial.
  6. Adaptability: Comfortable with the potential for providing personal care and handling the varying physical demands of the role, including assisting with mobility and the ability to adapt approaches to meet the needs of each student as an individual.
  7. Team Player: Collaborative and able to work well as part of a multidisciplinary team, supporting colleagues and contributing to the overall success of the school.
Why Join Us?
  1. Rewarding Role: Make a real, positive impact on the lives of children with special needs, providing them with the support and encouragement they need to thrive in their education.
  2. Supportive Work Environment: Join a friendly, dedicated team that values and appreciates the contributions of all staff. You will have the support of experienced colleagues who are committed to your success and well-being.
  3. Flexible Working: As this is a part-time position, it provides an ideal opportunity for those seeking a flexible working schedule while still making a meaningful impact in the lives of young learners.

Hours: 8.30am – 3.30pm. Flexible days.
