Job summary

Trial Balance Consulting is seeking an experienced Assistant Accountant for a permanent part‑time role (circa 30 hours). The position is split between the Truro headquarters and a hybrid option if required.

Reporting to the CFO, you will produce monthly and quarterly management accounts, extract data from MS Excel and a Xero based system, and provide financial intelligence to support projects, budgets and targets.

Qualifications

• Advanced MS Excel skills with data extraction and analysis capabilities.
• Experience in management accounting or assistant accounting roles in professional services.
• AAT qualification or equivalent; strong IT aptitude and numeric skills.
• Experience liaising with senior management and teams across departments.

Responsibilities

• Produce monthly and quarterly management accounts with accompanying commentary.
• Provide financial intelligence to senior management for projects and budgeting.
• Comment on monthly reporting packs to department leaders.
• Lead reconciliations, prepayments, accruals and recharge processes.
• Support quarterly reviews and annual budgeting activities.
• Identify areas to improve financial performance across divisions.
• Assist in budgeting and business planning activities.
• Prepare for annual audits and mentor junior staff.
• Assist CFO with ongoing projects and costings.

Trial Balance Consulting have been exclusively reengaged by a long standing client operating in the leisure and hospitality sector. The company have tasked us with sourcing an experienced Assistant Accountant to join their finance team in a newly created role. The position is offered on a permanent contract and with part time working hours circa 30 hours per week, to be split between the company headquarters in Truro and with a hybrid working option if required.

Reporting the company’s CFO and working as part of a friendly finance team, this will be an interesting role which focuses on producing high quality management accounts by extracting data from MS Excel spreadsheets and a Xero based digital accounting system. Whilst it’s an analytical opportunity, it’s also one that works closely with colleagues throughout the business and has a highly commercial nature to it.

Key responsibilities to include:

• Production of monthly and quarterly management accounts with accompanying commentary for the senior management team
• Provide senior management team with key financial intelligence to assist in ongoing projects, financial analysis, and budget/target reporting
• Commentating monthly financial reporting pack data to financial and non-financial department leaders
• Take a lead role in control account reconciliations, prepayments, accruals and recharges
• Provide assistance and support for quarterly reviews and annual budgets
• Identify areas for improving financial performance of specific divisions of the business
• Assisting budgeting and business planning
• Assist in preparing for annual audit
• Mentor and develop junior members of the team
• Assist the CFO with ongoing and ad-hoc business projects and costings

This role calls for an experienced candidate, either operating in a management accounting capacity or as an Assistant Accountant. The position is likely to be data driven so an excellent understanding of MS Excel (Marcos, V Lookups, Pivot Tables etc.), will be an essential requirement. Previous experience gained in a multi-income-stream services environment would be advantageous though not essential. Candidates may be part/fully professionally or AAT qualified, or qualified by experience, but must possess excellent all round IT aptitude (particularly MS Excel). This is a role that regularly liaises with colleagues in all departments and communication skills a must.
