Job summary

NUVIA UK is seeking a waste engineering lead for decommissioning packages, reporting to the Head of Waste and Material Processing. The role requires coordinating waste strategies, characterisation campaigns and regulatory compliance across project lifecycles in a hybrid work setting within the UK.

BPSS basic clearance is required. The successful candidate will lead cross-disciplinary teams, develop waste inventories and ensure safety, environmental and regulatory standards are met throughout

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in engineering/science disciplines.
  • Chartered professional recognition or strong comparable experience in regulated environments.
  • Solid knowledge of radioactive waste management and waste characterisation principles.
  • Familiarity with IRR17, EPR 2016, and CDM Regulations 2015 and their practical application.
  • Health and safety qualifications such as IOSH/NEBOSH are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead waste engineering activities for decommissioning packages across projects lifecycle.
  • Develop and implement waste management strategies complying with regulatory requirements and permits.
  • Prepare DQOs, WSAPs and waste characterisation methodologies for approval by a Radioactive Waste Adviser.
  • Plan and oversee waste characterisation campaigns, including sampling and reporting.
  • Develop waste inventories, forecasts and route assessments for project planning.
  • Coordinate resources and manage internal/external specialists and laboratories.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science or related field
Chartered Engineer/Chartered Scientist or equivalent recognition
Knowledge of radioactive waste management and waste characterisation principles
Familiarity with IRR17, EPR 2016 and CDM Regulations 2015 implementation

Description of the assignment

NUVIA UK's Technical Services & Consulting department is fast growing with hybrid opportunities available up and down the country. We're striving to create a multidisciplinary team to offer our clients the best range of talent.

BPSS clearance will be required at basic level. Prior clearance will not be transferrable.

The role is accountable to the Head of Waste and Material Processing and acts as the waste engineering lead for assigned decommissioning packages, such as facilities, process systems or major plant items, ensuring that waste management requirements are integrated throughout the project lifecycle.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Lead waste engineering activities associated with assigned decommissioning packages, facilities, plant systems or major components throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Implement waste management strategies to support decommissioning activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, environmental permits, Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) and Best Available Techniques (BAT).
  • Prepare DQOs, WSAPs and supporting waste characterisation methodologies for review and approval by an appropriately qualified Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA).
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee waste characterisation campaigns, including sample collection, analysis, interpretation of results and production of technical reports.
  • Develop waste inventories, waste forecasts and waste route assessments to support project planning and delivery.
  • Define resource requirements necessary to deliver waste engineering activities and coordinate the deployment of internal specialists, framework contractors, analytical laboratories and waste service providers.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Support CDM compliance activities, ensuring waste management hazards, risks and control measures are appropriately identified, documented and managed throughout planning and execution.
  • Engage with multidisciplinary project teams to ensure waste management requirements are integrated into decommissioning planning, engineering design, construction and execution activities.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders
  • Support the development and implementation of waste treatment, processing, packaging, transport and disposal routes to achieve safe, compliant and cost-effective waste management outcomes.
  • Coordinate with disposal facilities and waste service providers to ensure waste acceptance requirements are understood and incorporated into decommissioning and characterisation strategies.
  • Support waste consignment activities through the preparation and review of technical documentation and supporting evidence.
  • Support readiness reviews, package reviews and project gate reviews through the provision of waste engineering expertise and technical documentation.
Profile

Qualifications:

  • Degree (BSc, MSc or equivalent) in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science or other relevant scientific or technical discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist or equivalent professional recognition, or demonstrable experience performing a comparable role within the nuclear or other highly regulated industry.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of radioactive waste management and waste characterisation principles.
  • Familiarity with the application of IRR17, EPR 2016 and CDM Regulations 2015 and their implementation within construction, decommissioning or engineering projects.
  • Formal health and safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent) are desirable.

Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience delivering waste management activities within nuclear decommissioning, waste management or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience planning and delivering waste characterisation campaigns, including development of DQOs, WSAPs, sampling campaigns and characterisation reports.
  • Experience developing waste management strategies, waste route assessments and waste disposition plans.
  • Experience supporting or delivering building clearance, deplanting, decommissioning or facility clean-out projects.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams including engineering, operations, Health Physics, environmental and project management disciplines.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, specialist suppliers, laboratories and technical support organisations.
  • Experience developing technical documentation, specifications, work packages and engineering reports.
  • Experience managing technical risks, identifying solutions and resolving delivery issues within complex projects.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring or directing graduates, apprentices or junior technical personnel.
  • Experience engaging with waste disposal facilities, treatment providers, regulators and external stakeholders is desirable.
  • Experience working on fusion, nuclear, radiological or hazardous waste projects is desirable.
