Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking an Overhead Line Trainer/Assessor to join the Power Transmission & Distribution team in Derby. The role delivers high-quality training and assessment across overhead line activities to maintain safety and consistency.

  • Deliver training and assessment for Overhead Line (OHL) activities and certifications.
  • Assess construction and operational tasks to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Develop and update training materials and participate in events like the Winter Training School.
  • Support the Training Team Leader to create innovative training solutions and resources.

About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for an Overhead Line Trainer/Assessor to join our Power Transmission & Distribution team in Derby. This role requires a candidate with proven experience working on Overhead Lines, bringing practical expertise to the delivery of training and assessment across EHV operational activities.

In this role, you’ll deliver high-quality training and assessment across overhead line activities, ensuring safe, consistent and effective operational standards are maintained across the business.

The role is based at our training centre in Derby, with occasional site visits required throughout the year. A company car is provided, along with full support for travel and overnight stays where required.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Promote and champion a culture aligned to Balfour Beatty’s values
  • Deliver training, assessment and certification for Overhead Line (OHL) activities
  • Assess and verify construction and operational activities, including plant and vocational qualifications
  • Support the development of innovative, value-adding training solutions alongside the OHL Training Team Leader
  • Ensure consistency in standards through strong understanding and application of corporate governance requirements
What you'll be doing
  • Build strong, effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support Overhead Line (OHL) training, assessment and NVQ certification
  • Assess Overhead Lines operatives to ensure compliance with current legislation and company standards
  • Deliver and assess OHL vocational qualifications and a range of training programmes across the business
  • Work with the Training Team to continuously review and improve training solutions, ensuring alignment with business needs
  • Develop and update training materials to meet agreed standards and company branding requirements
  • Promote OHL training across the business and support opportunities to expand training delivery
  • Deliver training and assessment at key events, including the annual Winter Training School
  • Travel across the UK to deliver and assess OHL and vocational training when required.
  • Ensure training activities are delivered in line with company policies, P&OD strategy and compliance standards
  • Maintain and develop professional capability through continuous professional development
Who we’re looking for

Essential:

  • Experience of working within the utilities industry
  • Experience of climbing and working within the High Voltage Transmission business
  • Good IT skills, particularly with Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Holds a Level 3/4 or equivalent qualification in a related subject (i.e. engineering)
  • Full Driving License (maximum 6 points)
  • Willingness to travel throughout the UK and stay away from home for short periods when required
  • Advanced Climber
  • Tower Rescue
  • Management or Supervision Qualification

Desirable:

  • Teaching or Training Qualification
  • Workplace Assessor Qualification
