The Independent is an online news publisher established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence. In 2016, The Independent transitioned to a fully digital publisher, focusing on sustainability and safeguarding its journalistic values.

The Independent has been a pioneer in innovation, being the first British newspaper to introduce a Saturday magazine, give photography equal prominence as news copy, challenge the Westminster lobby system, switch to a compact 'tabloid' format, launch a concise quality paper, and successfully transform into a fully digital publication.

Through various platforms such as The Independent, Independent TV, eCommerce, indy100, and subscriptions, the organization aims to continue delivering independent journalism to over 100 million global visitors monthly, amplifying its voice worldwide.

Our international editorial team is based mainly in London and New York.

The role

The Independent seeks to recruit an Optimization Editor for the UK late shift, working from 4 pm to 1 am, Monday to Friday, with some weekend shifts. This role involves enhancing one of the world's fastest-growing news brands within a small team of digital publishing experts. The ideal candidate will have a strong news background, comprehensive knowledge of digital publishing—including SEO, social media, and editing—and the ability to work independently to optimize content for large audiences.

The role is suitable for candidates seeking career advancement, with responsibilities including crafting compelling headlines, editing news copy, and planning evergreen content for major events. A keen interest in journalism's future, including AI on the Bulletin platform, is essential. This is a middleweight to senior position involving regular interaction with the Head of Growth and senior colleagues.

Applicants should be adept at managing multiple priorities calmly and systematically. The role offers hybrid or remote work options, with periodic meetings at the London headquarters. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
