Job description

Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Optical Engineer, working in the GE Vernova Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, focused on development of new technologies for gas sensing.

The M&D product line is a leading vendor of sensing devices and systems for Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers, spanning sensing of multiple asset types with a broad portfolio of advanced technology to help customers understand and optimize the operating condition of key assets such as HV/MV power transformers and circuit breakers.

Based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, you will be part of the Engineering R&D team, primarily developing optical sensing methods and technology for power transformer monitoring. Your work will involve understanding current GE monitors, applying scientific and engineering knowledge to develop new techniques, and testing new optical sensor technologies for future applications in transformer and grid monitoring.

Job Description

Role Summary:

  • The role involves working in both office and lab environments.
  • You will present outcomes and recommendations to stakeholders and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to develop new sensor-based products.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop optical-based technologies for transformer monitoring within the R&D team.
  • Investigate and implement sensing technology developments for DGA and related monitoring products.
  • Design and develop test plans and strategies for R&D projects in optical sensor technology.
  • Conduct hands-on lab tests with data acquisition and analysis using appropriate hardware and software.
  • Develop relevant algorithms and calibration models.
  • Document and present results to management and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams to define and develop product requirements, mechanical and electrical designs, and testing plans.
  • Contribute analytical and physics-based analysis within the wider R&D team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the line manager.

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in physics, engineering, or a related field at Master’s level or equivalent knowledge/experience.
  • Research experience in optical/laser technology.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and presentation software.
  • Experience with data acquisition, experimental automation, and modeling (e.g., Matlab, Python, LabView, Simulink).
  • Knowledge of laser technology, lab techniques, and safety considerations.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams to meet objectives.

Desirable Criteria:

  • PhD in optical gas sensing or laser technology.
  • Experience with gas detection technology in industrial product development.
  • Expertise in molecular spectroscopy and trace gas detection.
  • Experience with photo-acoustic spectroscopy and dissolved gas analysis methods.
  • Awareness of DGA industry applications and sensing technologies.
  • Interest or experience in data analytics, statistical analysis, or machine learning.
  • Understanding of automated self-diagnostics in scientific devices.
