Job summary

Southend University Hospital NHS Trust in Essex is seeking an experienced Band 8A Service Manager to lead Ophthalmology across multiple sites, drive service improvement and workforce development, and ensure safe, effective patient care.

You will work with clinical and divisional leaders to deliver strong day-to-day management, drive capacity planning, governance and patient pathways, and lead transformation within Ophthalmology.

Responsibilities

• Provide visible and effective operational leadership across Ophthalmology services.
• Manage service performance, capacity and demand, ensuring patient pathways are actively monitored and managed.
• Support delivery against national and local access and performance standards.
• Collaborate with clinical teams to maximise outpatient, diagnostic, theatre and treatment capacity.
• Lead and support service transformation, pathway redesign and continuous improvement.
• Provide leadership for administrative and operational teams.
• Support workforce planning, recruitment, retention, development and succession planning.
• Manage delegated budgets and contribute to financial planning, productivity and efficiency programmes.
• Identify, manage and escalate operational, workforce, quality and patient-safety risks appropriately.
• Use activity, performance and workforce information to identify pressures and develop sustainable solutions.
• Ensure robust governance arrangements are embedded throughout the service.
• Build strong working relationships with consultants, nursing and AHP teams, administrative colleagues, corporate services and external partners.
