Overview:

As a key member of the ZEISS Operations Team, the Operations & Quality Technician plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional optical products to our customers. This hybrid role involves both hands-on production duties—such as cutting, edging, and fitting lenses—and quality control responsibilities to ensure all work meets or exceeds ZEISS and British standards. You’ll be part of a team that takes pride in precision, continuous improvement, and high customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cut, edge, and fit spectacle lenses using defined SOPs, ensuring right-first-time results.
  • Use a variety of glazing techniques to support accurate and efficient production.
  • Use digital platforms to track job status through the production process.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment to support a 5S culture.

Quality Control Duties:

  • Inspect finished orders to ensure they meet ZEISS and British quality standards.
  • Perform routine quality checks using appropriate equipment such as foci meters.
  • Maintain and calibrate quality control equipment to ensure testing accuracy.
  • Reject and reorder simple jobs where necessary to maintain a seamless workflow.
  • Provide feedback to glazing team and technicians on identified quality concerns.
  • Work proactively with technicians of varying skill levels to identify and resolve repeat quality issues.

General Operational Support:

  • Comply with health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Support achievement of departmental KPIs and overall customer satisfaction.
  • Identify and suggest process improvements with a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development activities in line with the Skills Matrix.
  • Display ZEISS core values and contribute to a positive workplace culture.

Required Knowledge & Experience:

Must Have:

  • Previous experience in optical manufacturing or quality control.
  • Good manual dexterity and strong attention to detail.
  • Solid communication skills and the ability to give constructive feedback.
  • Ability to work effectively across teams with varied skill levels.
  • Strong decision-making abilities related to product quality.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work on 8 or 12-hour shifts as required.
  • Ability to commute reliably to the Birmingham facility.
  • Proven experience in quality control within an optical environment.
  • Understanding of the full glazing process.
  • Familiarity with ZEISS products and systems.
  • Experience working with innovations and Standardized Work Instructions (SA).
