Job summary

Gap Personnel Limited in Cardiff is seeking a Mechanical Plant Fitter to join a well‑established operation. The role focuses on hands‑on engineering, fault diagnosis, and repair of large plant equipment, with welding/fabrication bonus and strong safety emphasis.

The position is based in Cardiff, Monday to Friday, 7:00am–3:00pm, with a pay rate of £19.00 per hour and weekly pay. Candidates should be comfortable reading technical drawings and working independently or as part of a team.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical fitting background with good fault-finding skills.
• Experience handling heavy plant components and lifting equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation.

Responsibilities

• Strip, inspect and rebuild heavy mechanical components.
• Work on gearboxes, drivetrains and large assemblies.
• Use overhead cranes, jibs and lifting equipment safely.
• Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on plant equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and perform high-quality repairs.
• Ensure work meets safety and quality standards.

A great opportunity has become available for an experienced Mechanical Plant Fitter to join a well‑established engineering operation specialising in large plant and heavy mechanical assemblies. This role suits someone who enjoys hands‑on engineering, problem‑solving, and working on machinery that genuinely challenges your technical ability. Welding or basic fabrication experience is beneficial and supports a wide range of repair and overhaul tasks.

Key Responsibilities

• Stripping, inspecting and rebuilding heavy mechanical components
• Working on gearboxes, drivetrains and large mechanical assemblies
• Using overhead cranes, jibs and lifting equipment safely
• Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on plant equipment
• Diagnosing mechanical faults and completing high‑quality repairs
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings and engineering documentation
• Ensuring all work is completed in line with safety procedures and quality standards

What We’re Looking For

• Strong mechanical fitting background (plant, rail, HGV, industrial, marine or similar)
• Experience working with heavy components and lifting equipment
• Confident with mechanical fault‑finding and diagnostics
• Welding or fabrication experience is beneficial
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good understanding of health & safety in an engineering environment
• Reliable, proactive and keen to develop new skills
