Job summary

ISP School Battle is seeking a dedicated One-to-One Teaching Assistant for a fixed-term, term-time position in Battle, East Sussex. You will mentor a pupil or small group, support the teacher in lessons, and monitor progress while liaising with staff to ensure needs are met.

The role requires GCSE English/Maths at C or equivalent, with a strong education background and SEMH experience. The successful candidate will collaborate on lesson planning and supervise pupils during trips.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C or equivalent; A-level preferred.
  • Previous Teaching Assistant experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with SEMH pupils.
  • Ability to lead on a specialist area (e.g., reading, mathematics or forest school).
  • Committed to professional development and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and support one pupil or a small group of up to five pupils.
  • Support the classroom teacher during lessons.
  • Report on pupils' progress and liaise with school staff to meet needs.
  • Supervise pupils during non-classroom time and on trips.
  • Assist with lesson planning, preparation, setting work and marking.
  • Build positive relationships to drive engagement and learning outcomes.

Basic Salary: £24,890 FTE (£14,934 actual)

Hours: 22.5 hours per week, 3 days per week, including accompanying a pupil to Plumpton College one day per week

Contract: Fixed Term Contract, Term Time Only

Location: Battle, Sussex

ISP School is a special educational needs school that has been established in Kent for over 20 years. Renowned for working with vulnerable children aged 7 to 16 with a wide range of complex needs, our mission is to provide each pupil with a diverse and appropriate education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self‑discipline and engagement, inspires learning and encourages aspiration and achievement.

We have expanded our special educational needs provision by opening a new school with capacity for 60 pupils in Battle, East Sussex. The school is located within a country estate, with visually stunning surroundings.

Role Responsibilities
  • Dedicated to mentoring and supporting one pupil, or a small group of no more than five pupils
  • Supporting the classroom teacher during lessons
  • Reporting on pupils' progress and concerns, and liaising with other school staff to ensure pupils' needs are met
  • Supervision of pupils during non‑classroom time, including extra‑curricular activities and school trips
  • Assisting with lesson planning and classroom preparation
  • Setting work where appropriate, and marking
  • Building positive relationships with pupils and driving interaction and positive learning outcomes
Requirements
  • Have a strong basic education, ideally to A-level, with a minimum of GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics, and sound IT skills
  • Previous experience in a similar role, for example as a Teaching Assistant
  • Some previous experience of working with pupils with SEMH within an educational setting
  • Be experienced and confident enough to be able to lead on a specialism, for example reading, mathematics or forest school
  • Experience of behaviour management and techniques
  • Committed to professional development and willing to learn

The successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check, the cost of which will be met by ISP School Battle.
