Job summary

The Met Office offers a 12-month Year in Industry placement starting July 2027, based in the United Kingdom. You will join the Ocean Forecast Verification team to develop an Agentic AI capability for operational ocean monitoring, with weekly in-office attendance as part of a hybrid pattern.

We seek a maths/physics student with programming experience (Fortran, Python, MATLAB) and a strong drive in AI. This placement runs full-time, 37 hours per week, and may lead to Graduate Development

Qualifications

• Interest in AI/ML with motivation to build skills in the area.
• Degree in mathematical or physical sciences with an industrial placement year included.
• Experience with programming or scientific computing tools (Fortran, Python, MATLAB).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Clear, concise communication and collaborative teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Work with marine experts on quality assurance and anomaly detection for monitoring forecast models.
• Develop an Agentic AI-driven monitoring workflow.
• Train AI Agents to assess model outputs and highlight anomalies.
• Summarise system status in natural language for end users.
