Job description

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner in the Medicine and Oncology Occupational Therapy Team, based at the City Campus.

You will be involved in assessing, treating, and rehabilitating patients with complex physical and cognitive needs, working alongside a multidisciplinary team to support patient discharge from hospital. Some clerical and administrative tasks, such as record-keeping, filing, and photocopying, will also be required. You are expected to work independently.

We seek an individual with experience in therapies within a health or social care setting. You should enjoy working with medicine and oncology patients, including end-of-life care. The role requires motivation, adaptability to changing priorities in a busy environment, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

This position also involves contributing to weekend and bank holiday shifts as part of our rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will collaborate with Occupational Therapists covering respiratory, renal, oncology, and haematology wards.

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Involvement in assessment, progression, and discharge planning, implementing rehabilitation programs delegated by registered staff.
  2. Managing your own caseload, working independently and with the team.
  3. Gathering information about patients' home circumstances, conducting functional assessments, ordering equipment, and planning discharges.
  4. Working with diverse patient groups, including those with long-term conditions or receiving end-of-life care.
  5. Assisting patients in managing symptoms related to their conditions.
  6. Providing informal supervision to junior staff and contributing to student placements and team training.
  7. Performing non-clinical duties such as photocopying and filing.
  8. Maintaining excellent communication with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team.
