Job overview

Join us for a unique opportunity to work as a Forensic Psychologist in Training across the Yorkshire and Humberside Personality Disorder Partnership (YHPDP). The service focuses on enabling progressive and trauma-informed engagement to improve outcomes for individuals with profound feelings of being unsafe, often linked to personality disorder diagnoses.

This is a training role. To secure a place on the training programme, applicants will be interviewed jointly with Cardiff Metropolitan University. If you apply, also submit an application for the PgD programme, noting your application for the trainee Forensic Psychologist role. The interview for both will be conducted simultaneously.

Further details about the course and application process are available here.

As a trainee forensic psychologist, you will need to successfully gain a place on this programme.

Main duties of the job

Provide a highly specialist psychological service across the Yorkshire and Humberside Personality Disorder Partnership (YHPDP), which offers services under the national OPD strategy, jointly commissioned by HMPPS and the NHS. The service supports high-risk offenders, often linked to severe personality difficulties, working across various teams to enhance assessment, supervision, and risk management, including joint casework and support for implementing the OPD Pathway.

The post requires independent work under supervision, with regular reviews, in accordance with the training route, HCPC, and BPS guidelines. Clinical supervision will typically be provided by a qualified Forensic Psychologist or other healthcare professionals.

This is a full-time position. The post holder will undertake tasks to demonstrate competencies for training within specified timeframes.

Working for our organisation

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) is the main provider of mental health and learning disability services in Leeds, with additional specialized inpatient services and nationwide services. As a teaching trust with strong university links, we excel in teaching, research, and development.

Benefits include employee wellbeing support, 27-33 days annual leave, flexible and remote working options, NHS Pension Scheme, career development opportunities, and various discounts and schemes.

Applicants requiring a UK visa must note that the Trust provides sponsorship only for registered healthcare practitioners; this is a mandatory requirement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is part of a 3-year fixed-term training programme leading to eligibility for HCPC registration as a Forensic Psychologist. Successful completion may lead to a permanent Band 7 role.

The employer will pay tuition fees for the Cardiff Met Practitioner PgD programme, which is fully online. Candidates should have experience working within the criminal justice system or secure mental health care.

The YHPDP team includes psychologists, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, housing workers, and probation staff, working collaboratively to develop risk management plans and support service users' treatment needs. The team promotes a reflective, safe, and inclusive culture, offering training, supervision, and development opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support psychologically informed case management using psychological knowledge and skills.
  • Complete psychological formulation and assessment.
  • Deliver individual and group interventions.
  • Provide consultation and psychologically informed advice to HMPPS colleagues, including attending panels and multi-agency arrangements.
  • Contribute to service development projects, including training, policy, and research.
  • Complete all requirements of the PgD programme.

The post may involve remote work and regional travel. Candidates must hold a BPS-accredited undergraduate degree in Psychology, a BPS-accredited MSc in Forensic Psychology, and at least one year of experience in applied forensic psychology.
