Job description

A healthcare assistant in a GP surgery does a different job from one on a hospital ward: it is appointment-based, with clinics for long-term conditions, and a lot of measurements and tests. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) is recruiting a permanent, part-time Band 3 Nursing Support Worker for Bryntirion Surgery in Bargoed, in the Caerphilly area of South Wales. The post is 30 hours a week over five days.

About the Employer

ABUHB is the NHS body serving the communities of Gwent, with more than 14,000 staff and volunteers across hospitals, GP practices, community services and mental health settings, and a long-term plan called the Gwent Strategy 2025–2035. Bryntirion Surgery has a history that is worth knowing. A local news report said the surgery was run from early 2024 by a GP partnership supported by a private company, which handed the contract back, with the health board taking over management from April 2025. So this vacancy is with the NHS health board itself.

Read Before You Apply

The pay shown is for a full-time week, not your pay. The advert's range of £26,813 to £27,890 is the Band 3 scale in Wales for 2026/27, and it is "pro rata". Assuming a 37.5-hour full-time week, 30 hours is 80% of that, which works out at roughly £21,450 to £22,310 a year. That is our own calculation, so confirm the actual figure in the job pack.

Sponsorship is welcomed on paper, but check the details. The advert says applications from people who need Skilled Worker sponsorship will be considered alongside others. Band 3 roles were largely removed from the Skilled Worker route in July 2025, with a limited 2026 exception for some healthcare support roles that is due to end on 31 December 2026. We couldn't confirm that a 30-hour part-time post at this pay level would qualify, so ask the employer before you pay anyone for visa help. This is general information, not immigration advice.

Some experience is essential. You need experience working in a health or social care setting providing direct patient care, not just a willingness to learn.

Welsh is desirable, not required. The advert says Welsh and English speakers are equally welcome.

Shift patterns. The post is five days a week, but the person specification lists the ability to work a range of shift patterns as essential, so ask what the rota looks like.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Planning and prioritising your own delegated workload, and adjusting for emergencies and priority tasks
  • Working within established procedures, under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional
  • Recording accurate, timely information, such as height, weight and BMI
  • Supporting registered professionals in clinics for long‑term conditions and other clinics
  • Taking and recording physiological measurements, including temperature, blood pressure, respiration rate, pulse and diabetic foot checks, and escalating anything abnormal
  • Carrying out point‑of‑care tests, including urine tests and pregnancy tests, recording blood glucose and following quality checks on equipment
  • Attending further training to develop new skills
Pay, Contract & Location
  • Pay: £26,813 to £27,890 a year pro rata (NHS Wales Agenda for Change Band 3)
  • Contract type: Permanent, part time, 30 hours a week over five days
  • Location: Bryntirion Surgery, West Street, Bargoed CF81 8SA
  • Closing date: 3 November 2026 (reference 040-ACS244-1026)

The advert lists no individual benefits. It describes learning and development opportunities, flexible working where possible and a "comprehensive NHS benefits package". NHS Wales roles normally include the NHS Pension Scheme and a national annual leave entitlement, so read the full job pack for current terms.

  • A Level 3 qualification in a healthcare‑related subject, or equivalent experience with evidence of work‑based competence in the clinical duties of the role
  • Knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales and the All Wales Delegation Guidelines
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and confidentiality, including data protection rules
  • Experience of working in a health or social care environment, giving direct patient care
  • Good written and verbal communication, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Calm under pressure, with a caring and compassionate manner
  • Organisational skills, and ability to use Microsoft Office and Teams
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties, including lifting and assisting with mobility
  • Ability to work a range of shift patterns
  • An enhanced DBS check
  • Experience with patient groups relevant to the work and experience in the NHS
  • Welsh language skills, at levels 1 to 5
