If you're an experienced nurse looking for a more supportive, balanced role where your skills still make a real difference, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) could be just the change you're looking for. Here, we do things differently. You’ll still be making a huge impact helping collect plasma that saves lives, but without some of the stress and strain of traditional NHS roles. It’s a chance to use your clinical and leadership skills in a role that gives back, while giving you room to grow.

Our donors are incredible people, and your job is to make sure they feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. You’ll also be leading and supporting a team of Healthcare Assistants in our Plasma Donor Centres, helping them do their best work and build their confidence and skills along the way.

Don’t worry if you don’t have experience with plasma donation; we’ll teach you everything you need to know. We offer a full induction and training programme, including around 6 weeks of supernumerary time with a mentor to support you as you settle in.

This is more than just a job — it’s a chance to be part of a close-knit, values-led team that truly cares. If you're ready for a new kind of nursing role where development, support, and people come first, we’d love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you’ll lead and support a dedicated team to deliver safe, high-quality care to our plasma donors. You'll help your colleagues grow through mentoring and guidance, while ensuring every donor has a positive, reassuring experience. Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  1. Leading your team to safely collect plasma and meet programme needs.
  2. Making sure all plasma collected meets safety and quality standards.
  3. Using your clinical knowledge to assess donor eligibility and make safe decisions.
  4. Managing and learning from any issues or safety concerns to keep improving.
  5. Being a role model to drive positive change, improve services, and support your colleagues through mentoring, guidance, and strong, inspirational leadership.
  6. Coaching your team and supporting them with new procedures and skills.
  7. Living our values by creating a culture built on respect, listening, and teamwork.
  8. Stepping in for the Plasma Operations Manager when needed and supporting the other Plasma teams.
  9. Helping to make the donation experience smooth, positive, and worth coming back for.

You’ll be part of a rota that includes evening, weekend, and some public holiday shifts but no night shifts. Your schedule will be shared at least four weeks in advance, and occasionally, you may be asked to support other Plasma centres with prior notice.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of successful implementation of change with a key focus on managing and motivating people.
  • Experience of mentorship, coaching, and presentation of educational materials.
  • Understanding and knowledge of patient safety initiatives, strategies, and risk management.

Qualifications and Training

  • Registered Nurse with current Nursing and Midwifery Council registration (Part 1 Adult/General, level 1 or 2) (which must be maintained).
  • Evidence of commitment to continued learning and application in practice, including demonstrated commitment to own Continuous Professional Development.

About Us

It takes all types of people to deliver the service that saves and improves lives. At NHS Blood and Transplant, you’ll join a team of more than 6,000 people making a genuine difference across the UK. We play a unique role in the NHS by helping people donate blood, blood products, organs, tissues, or stem cells to save lives.

Our three core values are what set us apart: Caring, Expertise, and Quality. They guide everything we do and help us deliver extraordinary work, saving and improving more lives.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that reflects the diverse communities we serve and encourage applications from all sectors of the community.

What we offer:

  • No night shifts
  • Flexible working options where possible
  • 27 days annual leave (pro-rata for part-time) plus Bank Holidays, increasing with service length
  • NHS pension scheme, a defined benefit scheme
  • Support for learning and development through our Thrive programme, open to all staff

This vacancy will close at 23:59 on 25th May 2025. Interviews are anticipated in the week commencing 2nd June 2025, subject to confirmation.
