Job description
Overview

A Band 5 Dietitian is sought to join a hospital team in an acute setting. This is a Fixed Term (12 months with extension) or Permanent position with Tier 2 sponsorship available for Health & Care Professionals who require sponsorship to work in the UK. Applications from EU and UK trained Health & Care Professionals with appropriate experience are welcome. The successful applicant will be issued the relevant paperwork if required and may be asked to work across hospital sites covered by the Trust. A twelve month Preceptorship programme is available for all Band 5 staff and time is allocated for study and shadowing with experienced specialist dietitians in areas including critical care, stroke, gastroenterology, and paediatrics.

The role provides cover for areas including the Acute Medical Unit, gastroenterology, respiratory, endocrine, haematology, surgery (including head & neck and vascular) and care of the elderly. You will manage 1–2 general outpatient clinics per week and may be required to travel between sites as needed. The hospital has an integrated team of dietitians, nutrition nurses and assistants, and there is an emphasis on professional development and clinical governance.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical expertise to support high standards of therapeutic care for patients in their care.
  • Manage own caseload with high standards of assessment, management, treatment and advice to meet patient needs.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in health, social care, local authority and other agencies to meet patient needs.
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of team resources and contribute to service development and clinical governance.
  • Represent the Nutrition and Dietetic department and contribute to the wider Therapy service.
  • Act as a clinical knowledge resource for non-qualified staff and promote clinical excellence within their scope of practice.
  • Manage a clinical caseload autonomously with access to advice from senior dietetic staff; work within a multidisciplinary team to plan treatment and care.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to drive clinical care excellence and service improvement within the specialty.
  • Assess patients holistically, considering ethnic, cultural and spiritual needs when planning treatments.
  • Contribute to standards/compliance targets within their specialty and provide information and education to patients and carers.
  • Empower patients to make informed treatment decisions using expert knowledge and relevant resources.
  • Participate in service reviews, provide prompt clinical advice to health professionals, and influence care delivery positively.
  • Provide information to patients and relatives and contribute to patient information materials; support patients and carers in managing their condition and promoting health and wellbeing.
  • Provide symptom advice to patients and health professionals and assist in formulating clinical guidelines and protocols with MDT and community input.
  • Maintain excellent communication with primary care and other healthcare providers, including voluntary sector colleagues.
  • Demonstrate counselling skills when communicating with patients under distress and refer to appropriate support services as relevant.
  • Participate in research, clinical audit and service evaluation; use evidence-based practice to improve care and quality of life.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical practice through supervision and peer support; drive personal annual appraisal and manage own caseload within defined areas.

Essential Requirements
