Following a restructure of our Street Works team we are recruiting to a range of permanent roles, including a number of apprenticeships. This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive, forward-thinking service that helps keep Shropshire moving by coordinating roadworks, utility works, events and other activities on the highway network.

Our team plays a vital role in meeting the Council’s statutory duties under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and the Traffic Management Act 2004. Whether you are interested in coordination, compliance, data, business support or site-based inspection work, you will help ensure that works on the highway are safe, lawful, well coordinated and delivered with minimum disruption to residents, businesses and visitors.

The Network Co-ordinator will assist the Network Co-ordination Manager to enable Shropshire Council to carry out its statutory duties under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and the Traffic Management Act 2004. The post holder will be a member of a small team and will have particular emphasis in planning and co-ordinating the network occupancy of works and activities taking place primarily but not limited to their defined geographical area.

The primary focus of this role will be to undertake license assessments across the network under guidance from the Technical Officer and processing permits with particular emphasis on activities taking place on the lower network. There will be an expectation to participate in other network management activities within the co-ordination team to support personal development and the needs of the service. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of applications ensuring compliance with all appropriate legislation and statutory guidance, implementing directions as and where needed ensuring that works and activities that are taking place on the highway network are well co-ordinated in the interests of safety, to minimise disruption and inconvenience to road users and to protect the structure of the street and the apparatus in it.

The role involves identifying any opportunities for collaboration and innovations, and processing permit and traffic management applications received from utility companies, highway works promoters and private works promoters working on the highway network in Shropshire. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will be able to forge strong and effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, works promoters and colleagues from across the service area.
