The opportunity

We are pleased to advertise an exciting opportunity to join NHS Resolutions Early Notification (EN) team working across the Safety and Learning Directorate as a National Obstetric Clinical Fellow. This post is a fixed-term or secondment basis for one year. 1 post will be available to start from April 2027.

What you'll be doing

In April 2017, NHS Resolution launched the EN scheme, since then, all maternity services have been required to notify NHS Resolution of incidents where there is the potential for long-term severe brain injury. The aims of the scheme are:

  • Investigate potential eligibility for compensation and take proactive action to reduce legal costs and improve the experience for the family and affected staff;
  • Share learning rapidly with the individual trust and the wider system in order to support safety improvement and prevent the same things happening again;
  • Build on our Saying Sorry and Being Fair work to ensure the process to obtain compensation is not a barrier to openness, candour and learning;
  • Preserve evidence to ensure we are able to respond to cases that a family may choose to bring at a later date;
  • Improve the process for obtaining compensation for families, meeting needs in real time where possible and trying to reduce the risk of claims increasing in value due to inflation or unmet needs (such as psychological support) translating into larger losses

This is a unique opportunity to contribute your clinical expertise at a national level, influencing maternity and neonatal safety improvement across England through learning from incidents, claims and patient safety investigations. The role includes reviewing case files to provide a clinical opinion on care and providing feedback to support learning from claims to prevent future harm.

Additional responsibilities include the opportunity to lead on an individual project within the organisation for publication, represent NHS Resolution at external meetings with partner organisations; and attend local, regional and national meetings or events.

What you’ll bring
  • Specialist knowledge of working within obstetrics in the NHS with a current minimum training level of ST5 or above
  • An understanding of the current issues and challenges within healthcare and specifically maternity services
  • An understanding of current improvement initiatives and national strategies to improve the safety of maternity and neonatal services
  • Experience of project coordination, management or leadership
  • Experience of presenting complex information to a wide range of audiences
What’s in it for you?
  • You’ll develop a better understanding of the principles of good governance and risk management in healthcare
  • Gain experience in incident investigation and an ability to link safety recommendations to quality improvement work
  • Contribute to a national culture focused on patient safety, openness, candour and learning.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical, legal and system partners to support improvements in maternity and neonatal care.
What we offer in return
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for career growth and development.
  • Collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Work in a progressive environment towards data-driven strategies.
  • A commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
  • Access to the NHS Pension Scheme and a minimum of 27 days Annual Leave.
  • Commitment to support individuals in having a work and life balance, offering flexible working arrangements.
Additional benefits
  • 24 hours employee assistance programme from Health Assured (EAP)
  • Eye care vouchers for Specsavers.
  • Blue Light card, a discount service for the emergency services and the NHS.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Season ticket loan scheme.
