Job description

Make a Difference That Matters – Become a Mental Health Support Worker at Northern Healthcare
Every Day Is an Opportunity to Change a Life

What if your next job was more than just a job? What if it was an opportunity to help someone rebuild their confidence, rediscover their independence and take meaningful steps towards a brighter future?

At Northern Healthcare, that’s exactly what we do.

We’re looking for a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Support Worker to join our team at Holland House in Preston. This role is ideal for someone who can predominantly work waking nights, while also being flexible to cover day shifts when required.

Location: Holland House, Preston
Starting rate: £12.91 per hour
Shift pattern: Predominantly waking nights, with flexibility to cover days when required

Whether you’re experienced in care or looking to begin a rewarding career in mental health support, we’d love to hear from you.

Discover Holland House – Supporting People to Move Forward

Holland House is a mental health supported living service based in Preston, providing a safe and supportive environment for adults working towards recovery and greater independence.

Our team supports people with a range of mental health needs, helping them develop the confidence, skills and stability to move forward with their lives.

We’re proud of the difference our colleagues make by creating opportunities for people to feel listened to, valued and empowered.

At Holland House, meaningful support can be found in the everyday moments — encouraging someone to try something new, helping them reconnect with their community, or being there to offer reassurance when things feel difficult.

Our service also supports people through important transitions, helping them build practical skills and work towards their individual recovery goals.

What Will You Be Doing?

No two days are the same. You’ll work alongside a dedicated team to provide person-centred support that helps people live fulfilling, meaningful and independent lives.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Promoting independence: Helping people develop everyday living skills and confidence in their abilities.

  • Supporting daily routines: Assisting with cooking, meal preparation, budgeting, household tasks and personal organisation.

  • Encouraging wellbeing: Supporting people with medication, appointments and healthy routines in line with their support plans and training.

  • Building connections: Helping people access local activities, maintain relationships and feel part of their community.

  • Providing emotional support: Listening without judgement, offering reassurance and helping people work through challenges.

  • Supporting recovery goals: Encouraging people to recognise their strengths, celebrate progress and take positive steps towards greater independence.

  • Working as a team: Communicating effectively with colleagues and other professionals to provide consistent, high-quality support.

  • Maintaining accurate records: Recording information and sharing updates to support safe and effective care.

As this role is predominantly waking nights, you’ll also play an important part in maintaining a safe, reassuring and supportive environment overnight, while remaining flexible to support day shifts when required.

The most rewarding part of the role? Seeing someone achieve something they once thought was out of reach — and knowing you played a part in helping them get there.

Full Training and Support from Day One

You don’t need years of experience to make a difference. We believe the right values, attitude and commitment to learning are just as important as previous experience.

We’ll help you build the knowledge and confidence you need through a structured training and development programme, including:

  • Structured company induction

  • Dedicated buddy support to help you settle into your role

  • Access to our online learning platform

  • Care Certificate training

  • First Aid training

  • Positive Behaviour Support training

  • Opportunities to achieve Level 2–5 Health & Social Care qualifications, subject to eligibility and availability

  • Ongoing professional development and leadership training

We’ll support you to develop your skills, grow in confidence and explore where a career with Northern Healthcare could take you.

Build a Career with Opportunities to Grow

Joining us as a Mental Health Support Worker can be the start of a long and rewarding career.

As you gain experience and develop your skills, you could explore opportunities such as:

  • Team Leader
  • Deputy Service Manager
  • Service Manager
  • Specialist Support Worker Champion roles
  • Leadership and mentoring opportunities

And if your passion is providing direct support, we’ll continue to encourage your development and help you grow your expertise in your role.

  • Free on-site parking at most services

  • Free Enhanced DBS check

  • Employee Assistance Programme, including counselling, physiotherapy and wellbeing support

  • Ongoing learning and career development

  • Monthly and annual colleague recognition awards

About You

We’re more interested in who you are and how you treat people than simply what’s written on your CV.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Kind, compassionate and committed to putting people first

  • Patient, respectful and able to listen without judgement

  • Reliable, positive and able to work well as part of a team

  • Good communicators who can build trusting relationships

  • Resilient and able to remain calm when situations become challenging

  • Willing to learn, develop and reflect on their practice

  • Passionate about helping people achieve greater independence and improve their quality of life

  • Able to predominantly work waking nights, while also covering day shifts when required

Previous experience in health and social care is welcome but not essential.

We’d also welcome applications from people with a Level 2 or Level 3 Health & Social Care qualification, experience supporting someone with mental health needs, or personal experience of supporting a family member, friend or loved one.

Successful applicants will need to provide two satisfactory references covering the previous three years, including any relevant roles supporting vulnerable adults, alongside a character reference. An Enhanced DBS check is required and will be funded by Northern Healthcare.

Whether you’re offering reassurance during a difficult night, helping someone develop a new skill, encouraging them to reconnect with their community or celebrating a personal achievement, your contribution matters.

If you’re looking for meaningful work, a supportive team and the opportunity to make a genuine difference, this could be the role for you.
