Job summary

Associated British Ports in Teignmouth is seeking a skilled Mechanical Technician to support the maintenance and reliability of port infrastructure. This is a hands-on role working on cranes, machinery and buildings to ensure safe port operations.

The position operates on a rotating shift pattern (06:00–14:30 and 08:30–17:00) with weekend availability as needed. An apprentice-trained fitter with heavy industry experience, teamwork and a full UK driving licence are essential.

Qualifications

  • Apprentice-trained Mechanical Fitter with heavy industry maintenance experience.
  • Experience with inspections, fault diagnostics and servicing.
  • Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience with port equipment (mobile cranes, loading shovels).

Responsibilities

  • Carry out inspection, maintenance, fault diagnostics and installation work in line with current legislation and company standards.
  • Maintain cranes, machinery and port equipment.
  • Maintain port buildings, including transit sheds, offices, and workshop machinery.
  • Complete scheduled servicing and report defects.

We’re looking for a skilled Mechanical Technician to support the maintenance and reliability of port infrastructure in Teignmouth. This is a varied, hands‑on role where you’ll work on a wide range of assets, helping to ensure safe and efficient port operations.

Shift pattern: The role operates on a rotating shift pattern of 06:00–14:30 and 08:30–17:00, with weekend availability required depending on operational and engineering demand.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Carry out inspection, maintenance, fault diagnostics, and installation work in line with current legislation and company standards
  • Maintain cranes, machinery, and port equipment
  • Maintain port buildings, including transit sheds, offices, and workshop machinery
  • Complete scheduled servicing and report defects
What We’re Looking For
  • Apprentice‑trained Mechanical Fitter
  • Experience in maintenance and breakdowns within heavy industry
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Flexible and proactive approach to work
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Experience or comfortable working at height and in confined spaces
  • Experience with port equipment (e.g. mobile cranes, loading shovels)
  • Background in port or industrial engineering environments
