Job summary

Laing O'Rourke in the United Kingdom is seeking an experienced Project Mechanical Engineer to lead the management and administration of mechanical works within the project programme. You will ensure quality, safety, and profitability in line with the project business plan, coordinating with design, construction and supply chain teams to deliver on time.

The role requires strong cost control, effective planning, and the ability to produce method statements, ITPs and drawings as needed.

  • Experience managing mechanical works on large projects in construction.
  • Strong understanding of quality procedures and project controls.

  • Experience coordinating with design, construction and supply chain.
  • Able to identify and resolve non-conformances early.

  • Maintain budget and implement cost control measures.

Role Purpose

Management and administration of project Mechanical works within programme deadlines and to a compliant quality satisfactory with the client, returning an acceptable profit margin in line with the agreed project business plan.

Key Role Requirements
  • Ensuring works are carried out within budget with effective cost control measures.
  • Managing the installation on the project by planning the works within program, resourcing labour effectively and ensuring a quality installation.
  • Ensure all technical information is available when required for the delivery of design and/or construction.
  • Aware of the Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Aware of the requirements of the safe working procedures such as confined spaces, hot works etc,
Key Role Requirements
  • Ensuring works are carried out within budget with effective cost control measures.
  • Managing the installation on the project by planning the works within the programme, resourcing labour effectively and ensuring a quality installation.
  • Ensure all technical information is available when required for the delivery of design and/or construction.
  • Prevention and early identification and resolution of non-conformance.
  • Effective communication of technical issues between project management and other functions/support services within the project team.
Dimensional/Spatial Control (C)
  • Provides dimensional control for a section of the works.
  • Ability and experience of developing off-site fabricated solutions with the digital modelling team and managing outputs from production facilities and suppliers.
  • Undertakes as-built surveys for a section of the works and presents results in a format that can be included in project records if required.
Workmanship, Quality, Inspection & Testing (C)
  • Complies with project and company quality procedures.
  • Understands the specification requirements and how they will be achieved.
  • Can produce method statements for common site operations and ensures that they are followed on site.
  • Produces and implements inspection and test plans that correctly interpret the specified quality requirements.
  • Raises non-conformance reports for all non-conformances and reports potential non-conformances.
Information, Change Control & Records (C)
  • Marks up drawings and specifications with any changes, referencing the documentation that verifies the change.
  • Interprets and extracts construction information from the drawings and specifications and provides this to the supervisors and operatives in a clear and understandable way using sketches.
  • Interrogates design information and determines if there are sufficient details to construct the works. Raises relevant documentation (e.g. TIEs, TQs, CVIs, etc.) with assistance from supervising engineers/managers, to resolve discrepancies and anomalies detected.
  • Effective communication of technical information to the workforce and liaison with functions/support services within the project team in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Preparation of basic calculations/drawings/sketches.
Permanent Works Materials, Products, Plant & Systems (F)
  • Has a competent understanding of the properties, principles and capabilities of relevant materials, products, plant and services.
  • Measures materials usage/wastage and provides quantity information for preparation of material call-off/requisitions.
  • Carries out on-site testing of materials, products, plant and systems as required by their role.
