Job summary

Marches Biogas is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to support anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from concept through commissioning. You will work with design teams, subcontractors and clients to deliver biogas facilities safely, on time and within budget.

The role involves planning, coordination, site monitoring, and ensuring compliance with AD regulations such as ATEX and DSEAR, while reviewing drawings and vendor proposals. Travel and field presence are expected.

Qualifications

  • BTEC / HNC Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Ability to develop conceptual arrangement drawings and high-level architectural images at proposals stage.
  • Ability to develop detailed pipework and mechanical support details.
  • Prepared to travel and possess a full driving license.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in project planning, scopes, schedules, budgets and resource plans for AD facility construction and upgrades.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, technology providers and regulators.
  • Review PFDs, P&IDs, mechanical/electrical drawings and equipment specs.
  • Support construction oversight, ensuring safety and AD best practices.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of mechanical, civil, electrical and process works.
  • Prepare project status updates, risk registers and engineering documentation.
  • Maintain as-built drawings and project records for handover.

Mechanical Project Engineer - (Anaerobic Digestion Projects)

Marches Biogas is based in Ludlow Shropshire. We are the UK’s leading provider of anaerobic digestion solutions for agriculture and waste management industries with more than 30 years AD experience. We also offer AD consultancy services including DSEAR assessments, site surveys, process and equipment selection reviews, design and implementation of plant upgrades as well as delivering major AD plant upgrades for our clients, including direct work with the water utilities. We also deliver mechanical, biological and operational support for many AD plants within the UK.

Job Summary:

The Project Engineer will support the delivery of anaerobic digestion (AD) projects from concept through commissioning. This role combines engineering expertise, project coordination, and technical oversight to ensure that biogas and renewable energy facilities are designed, built, and operated safely and efficiently. The Project Engineer will work closely with the design team, sub-contractors, equipment suppliers and clients to deliver high-quality AD projects on time and within budget.

1. Project Planning & Coordination
  • Assist in developing project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans for AD facility construction and upgrade projects.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, external contractors, technology providers, and regulatory bodies.
  • Support permitting activities, including environmental impact assessments and regulatory submissions.
2. Technical Engineering Support
  • Review and interpret process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, mechanical and electrical GA drawings, and equipment specifications,
  • Assist in technology selection and technical evaluation of vendor proposals.
3. Project Execution & Site Monitoring
  • Support construction oversight, ensuring all work aligns with project specifications, safety standards, and AD industry best practices.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of mechanical, civil, electrical, and process engineering works.
  • Track project progress, identify risks, and support mitigation plans to ensure successful project delivery.
4. Quality, Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure designs and installations comply with AD-specific regulations such as ATEX, DSEAR, environmental permitting, and pressure systems safety.
  • Conduct quality checks on equipment installations, pipeline works, digesters, pumps, blowers, and CHP/biomethane systems.
  • Prepare documentation for commissioning, performance testing, and handover procedures.
5. Procurement & Cost Management
  • Assist with procurement of key AD equipment (pumps, mixers, gas upgrading units, CHP engines, flare systems, feedstock handling systems).
  • Review supplier quotations and support commercial assessments
  • Monitor costs and ensure projects remain within approved budgets.
6. Commissioning & Performance Support
  • Support the commissioning team.
  • Help troubleshoot process or mechanical issues during start-up and early operation.
7. Communication & Reporting:
  • Prepare regular project status updates, risk registers, and engineering documentation.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to stakeholders, including clients and non-engineering staff.
  • Maintain accurate project records, drawings, and as-built documentation.

Skills and Experience:
  • BTEC / HNC Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience using Autodesk 3D and 2D CAD packages
  • Ability to develop conceptual arrangement drawings and high-level architectural images at proposals stage
  • Ability to develop detailed pipework and mechanical support details
  • Ability to adapt plans to changing circumstances
  • Ability to follow designs through from initial outline phase through to site installation and commissioning
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
