Mechanical Maintenance Technician — 4on 4off Shift

Job summary

Payen Search is seeking an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join our manufacturing operation on a 4 on 4 off shift pattern. You will maintain production equipment, perform planned and reactive maintenance, and support continuous improvement projects.

The ideal candidate will have an apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3, strong fault-finding skills, and a proactive, safety-focused approach to minimise downtime and ensure GMP-compliant operations.

Qualifications

• Time-served engineering apprenticeship - Minimum NVQ Level 3 or equivalent engineering qualification
• Demonstrable maintenance experience within a manufacturing or production environment.
• Strong fault-finding, diagnostic and problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance.
• Ability to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with production and engineering colleagues.
• Strong understanding of health and safety procedures within an industrial environment.
• Experience working within a high-volume or continuous manufacturing environment.
• Knowledge of GMP and hygiene-controlled manufacturing processes.
• Experience contributing to equipment reliability and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Previous experience supporting engineering teams during shutdowns or improvement projects.

Responsibilities

• Respond effectively to electrical equipment breakdowns, minimising production downtime.
• Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and routine equipment inspections.
• Diagnose machinery faults, identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring failures.
• Monitor production machinery and make adjustments to maintain optimal operating performance.
• Proactively identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
• Maintain accurate records of breakdowns, maintenance activities and equipment condition.
• Work closely with production teams and other departments to resolve technical issues.
• Support engineering projects, planned shutdowns and maintenance improvement initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with site health, safety, environmental, hygiene and GMP requirements.
• Follow engineering stores procedures and maintain accurate documentation.
• Provide technical support within a shift-based engineering team, and Deputise for the Senior Maintenance Technician when required.
