Job summary

National Grid is seeking two skilled Mechanical Fitters to maintain and overhaul critical substation equipment across the Solent area (Southampton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth). This hands-on role requires a recognised apprenticeship in Engineering/Mechanical or NVQ Level 3 with relevant industrial fitting experience.

You will work outdoors, sometimes at height, using hand and power tools, diagnosing faults, replacing worn components and supporting planned maintenance with paid overtime and

Qualifications

• A recognised apprenticeship in Engineering/Mechanical, or an NVQ/Level 3 Engineering/Mechanical qualification with relevant industrial fitting experience.
• Strong mechanical/electrical maintenance, overhaul or installation experience.
• Experience stripping, rebuilding and repairing plant and equipment.
• Confidence using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring equipment and torque tools.
• A proactive approach to fault finding and problem solving.
• A full UK driving licence.
• You live within 40 minutes travel to Southampton SO16 0AA, Bournemouth BH21 6SE or Portsmouth PO8 9LA.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair and overhaul electrical equipment at substations.
• Diagnose faults and perform repairs.
• Replace worn components and install new equipment.
• Support planned maintenance and emergency breakdown response.
• Work outdoors and at height on mobile platforms.
