Job Overview
Equans is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Smethwick and Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich. This is a full‑time role working 40 hours per week. The salary banding is £32,000 – £35,000 per annum, dependent upon skills and experience, plus a benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Work on mechanical systems including ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, medical gases, heating systems, domestic hot and cold‑water systems.
- Proactively respond to reactive jobs, diagnosing faults and repairing complex mechanical systems in accordance with relevant standards, operational procedures, and legislation.
- Respond to BMS alerts and phone calls during night shift, acting as the initial point of contact, assessing the issue, allocating the task to the appropriate team member, and completing necessary documentation. Ensure all records are handed over to the Helpdesk team at the start of their shift to support effective service continuity.
- Obtain Competent Person status following training and instruction for specialist ventilation systems, complex water systems, and medical gas installations.
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks across the site on various aspects of the building services in accordance with the PPM programme and personal competence and training.

Qualifications
- City and Guilds/NVQ levels 2 and 3, or a recognised apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline to City & Guilds level.
- Previous experience within a maintenance environment.
- Previous Competent Person/Authorised Person experience including ventilation and/or pressure systems (desirable).
- Previous experience within a healthcare maintenance environment (desirable).
Additional Requirements
This role includes a DBS Standard check; ability to pass is essential. You must have evidence of the right to work in the UK.
