Job summary

Equans UK & Ireland is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Smethwick and Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich. This full‑time role (40 hours) involves maintaining ventilation, pumps, boilers, and heating systems across sites.

You will respond to reactive faults, complete diagnostics, and document actions for service continuity. DBS checks are required and the role offers a competitive salary with benefits.

Qualifications

• City & Guilds/NVQ levels 2 and 3 or equivalent.
• Recognised engineering apprenticeship to City & Guilds level.
• Experience in a maintenance environment.
• Competent Person/Authorised Person experience (ventilation/pressure systems).
• Healthcare maintenance experience desirable.

Responsibilities

• Maintain ventilation, pumps, boilers, medical gases and building services.
• Respond to reactive faults, diagnose and repair complex mechanical systems.
• Respond to BMS alerts during night shifts and document actions.
• Obtain Competent Person status following training for systems such as ventilation and medical gas installations.
• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance across site.

Job description

Equans is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Smethwick and Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich. This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.

What will you deliver?

• Work on the following but not limited to; ventilation, pumps, compressors, boilers, medical gases, heating systems, domestic hot and cold-water systems
• Undertake a proactive role in responding to reactive jobs to complete diagnostic, fault finding and repair to complex mechanical systems in accordance with relevant standards and operational procedures and in compliance with legislation and guidance
• Respond to BMS alerts and phone calls during nightshift, acting as the initial point of contact. Assess the nature of the issue, allocate the task to the appropriate team member, and complete the necessary documentation. Ensure all records are handed over to the Helpdesk team at the start of their shift to support effective service continuity
• Obtain Competent Person status following training and instruction for systems such as specialist ventilation system, complex water systems and medical gas installations
• Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks to services across site on various aspects of the building services in accordance with the PPM programme and personal competence and training

Who are you?

• City and Guilds/NVQ levels 2 and 3
• Recognised apprenticeship in relevant engineering discipline to City & Guilds level
• Previously worked within a maintenance environment
• Previous Competent Person/Authorised Person experience including ventilation and/or pressure systems. (Desirable)
• Previously worked within a healthcare maintenance environment (Desirable)

This role includes a DBS Standard check therefore ability to pass is essential.
