Job summary

Astute is recruiting a Mechanical Engineer for a new-build Energy from Waste power plant in Tilbury, Essex. The role involves leading a team of mechanical technicians, planning maintenance, and coordinating with operations to optimise plant performance.

The position offers a salary up to £65,000 plus a £4,694 location allowance, bonus, overtime, pension, and other benefits, with safety and compliance at the forefront.

Qualifications

• HNC or equivalent in mechanical engineering.
• IOSH/NEBOSH qualifications are advantageous.
• Experience in heavy process environments preferred.
• Knowledge of CMMS is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of mechanical technicians to maximise plant availability.
• Schedule and optimise mechanical maintenance activities safely.
• Supervise on-site contractors.
• Collaborate with operations to address performance shortfalls.
• Assist in setting up and developing CMMS.
• Ensure activities comply with HSE policies.
• Work with the EPC team during build and commissioning and train new staff.
• Recruit mechanical technicians for the new build plant.
• Plan and execute outages once fully operational.
• Deputise for Engineering Manager when required.

Job description

Astute's Power Team is partnered with a market-leading Energy company, to recruit for a Mechanical Engineer to join their new-build Energy from Waste Power Station, currently in construction, in Tilbury, Essex.

Once fully operational, the EfW will process 350,000 tonnes of waste per annum to generate c.40MW of electricity to export to the national grid which is enough to power c.90,000 homes.

The vital Mechanical Engineer role comes with a salary of up to c.£65,000 + £4,694 location allowance + Bonus + Overtime + Pension + benefits

Responsibilities and duties of the Mechanical Engineer role

• Leading and managing a team of mechanical technicians to ensure the plant is maintained to the highest standard to ensure maximum plant availability.
• Scheduling, planning and optimising all mechanical maintenance activities in a safe and efficient manner.
• Supervising and directing contractors on site
• Working closely with the operations department to assess and review plant performance shortfalls and how these can be rectified.
• Assisting in the setting up and development of the sites Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
• Ensuring that all activities are carried out in a safe manner and in line with company Health, Safety and Environmental policies
• Working closely with the EPC team during the build and commissioning phase to understand the plant and place new staff on key training
• Recruitment of the Mechanical Technicians to join the team as it is a new build plant
• Planning and execution of outages once the plant is fully operational
• Deputise for the Engineering Manager as and when required

Professional Qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

• Ideally a HNC, or similar, in a relevant engineering subject such as Mechanical Engineering
• IOSH/NEBOSH will be advantageous

Personal Skills, Prior Experience And Knowledge

The Mechanical Engineer role would suit someone who has:

• Proven supervisory / management experience in heavy process engineering environments such as Power Generation (Energy from Waste, Biomass, Coal, CCGT, CHP, etc), Paper Mills, COMAH sites, Steelworks, Refineries, etc
• Good knowledge of legislation such as PSSR, PUWER, LOLER, CDM, etc
• Outage planning and execution experience
• Prior experience of P&L responsibility
• Good knowledge of CMMS
