Job summary

Magnus Search is seeking a practical Mechanical Engineer to join the workshop in Hollingbourne. You will build, assemble and test pumps, pipework and skid packages, using drawings and P&IDs to deliver finished equipment for customers in water and utilities sectors.

Based in the workshop with occasional site travel, you’ll handle fitting, alignment, testing and refurbishment, contribute to FATs, and help maintain safe, efficient workshop operations while supporting project delivery end-to-end.

Qualifications

• Solid mechanical engineering or fitting background with hands-on experience.
• Experience with pumps, pipework, valves, seals, or mechanical assemblies.
• Ability to read engineering drawings and P&IDs.
• Good practical skills with power tools and workshop equipment.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites as needed.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Building, assembling and testing mechanical equipment as per drawings and specifications.
• Carrying out mechanical fitting, alignment, fit-up checks and component inspections.
• Modifying, repairing and refurbishing existing equipment.
• Assisting with FATs, testing and customer delivery preparation.
• Working with the Project Engineer and production teams to deliver projects safely and on time.
• Inspecting components and supplier equipment to ensure specification compliance.
• Traveling to customer sites to support installation and commissioning.

Mechanical Engineer The Opportunity

Are you a hands‑on Mechanical Engineer who enjoys building, assembling, testing and solving problems rather than being stuck behind a desk?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing engineering operation working on pumping, wastewater treatment and mechanical equipment used across the water, utilities and environmental sectors.

You’ll play a key role in bringing equipment to life — from mechanical builds and pump installations through to testing, refurbishment and customer‑site work. No two days will necessarily look the same, making this a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys practical engineering, variety and getting stuck into projects from start to finish.

You’ll primarily be based in the workshop in Hollingbourne, working alongside an experienced engineering team, with occasional travel to customer sites when required.

Mechanical Engineer What You’ll Be Doing

• Building, assembling and testing mechanical equipment, including pumps, pipework, valves, frames and skid packages.
• Working from engineering drawings, P&IDs and build specifications to complete mechanical builds accurately.
• Carrying out mechanical fitting, alignment, fit‑up checks and component inspections.
• Modifying, repairing and refurbishing existing equipment.
• Supporting the preparation of equipment for FATs, testing and customer delivery.
• Working closely with the Project Engineer and wider production team to ensure projects are delivered safely, accurately and on time.
• Inspecting incoming components and supplier‑built equipment to ensure they meet the required specification.
• Identifying mechanical issues and suggesting practical improvements to equipment and build processes.
• Completing build records, test sheets and relevant project documentation.
• Maintaining a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.
• Travelling to customer sites when required to support installation, testing, maintenance or mechanical works.

Mechanical Engineer What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is practical, mechanically minded and enjoys getting their hands dirty. You don't necessarily need to have worked in exactly the same environment, but you should have a solid mechanical engineering or fitting background and be comfortable working with mechanical equipment.

Mechanical Engineer You’ll ideally have:

• Experience within mechanical engineering, mechanical fitting, manufacturing or a similar environment.
• Hands‑on experience with pumps, pipework, valves, seals, flanges or mechanical assemblies.
• The ability to read and understand engineering drawings and P&IDs.
• Good practical skills using power tools and workshop equipment.
• Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving abilities.
• A good eye for detail and a pride in producing quality work.
• A willingness to work both in the workshop and on customer sites.
• A full UK driving licence.

Mechanical Engineer Desirable Qualifications & Experience

Any of the following would be advantageous: Experience within the water or wastewater industry, HNC, HND, Degree or NVQ equivalent in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, CSCS Card, Confined Space certification, National Water Hygiene / EUSR, Thames Water Passport, SHEA Water, Forklift, telehandler or lifting/hoisting certification, Experience carrying out FATs, equipment testing or system commissioning.
